 DD-659 DANFS
Dashiell (DD-659) was launched 6 February 1943 by Federal Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co., Kearny, N.J.; sponsored by Mrs.
Dashiell arrived at Pearl Harbor 24 July 1943 to join the fast carrier task forces for the raids on Marcus Island of 31 August to 1 September; Tarawa, 18-20 September, and Wake Island, 5-6 October.
Dashiell patrolled and screened transports during the landings there on 18 and 19 September and the reinforcement landings of 1 October.

Kamikazes damage battleship USS New York (BB-34) and destroyers USS Sigsbee (DD-502), USS Dashiell (DD-659), and USS Hunt (DD-674).
- Submarine USS Gabilan (SS-252) attacks a Surabaya-to-Makassar convoy, sinking a cargo vessel and an auxiliary submarine chaser.
- Submarine USS Tirante (SS-420) attacks Japanese convoy MOSI-02 in the approaches to the Yellow Sea, sinking a transport, an escort vessel, and a coast defense vessel west of Quelpart Island.

Although damaged, the Sigsbee was credited with assisting in the downing of four enemy planes as the air attacks continued.
The Sigsbee was taken in tow by the USS Dashiell DD-659 and then by the cruiser USS Miami.
The Sigsbee was then towed to Pearl, arriving 6-7-45 where she was dry docked and a new stern added.

 Winter 2000
The first time I saw her was in Naples in 1959 on my way to my first ship, the USS Dashiell (DD-659).
The JPJ was also in the harbor with holiday lights rigged, and she looked beautiful from shore.
When the Dashiell was decommissioned the following year, I was fortunate to be transferred to the JPJ, and I thought I had "gone to heaven".

Here on the right is the USS Tattnall (DDG-19), after modifications by the Navy that added a second bow sonar dome.
Now a floating museum, she is berthed alongside the carrier USS Intrepid on Pier 86 in New York City.
