silas deane   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Silas Deane (December 24 1737 - September 23 1789), was a delegate to the American Continental Congress and later a diplomat.
On arriving in Paris, Deane at once opened negotiations with Vergennes and Beaumarchais, securing through the latter the shipment of many vessel loads of arms and munitions of war to America.
The publication of some "intercepted" letters in Rivington's Royal Gazette in New York (1781), in which Deane declared his belief that the struggle for independence was hopeless and counselled a return to British allegiance, aroused such animosity against him in America that for some years he remained in England.

The Influence of Iron in Ship Construction:1660 to 1830.
Deane, defending the case that his 'iron dogs' were a stronger method of securing beams replied, "between you and myself, the King must build no more ships, if nothing can be invented but knees..., we having not one knee in the yard".
Deane's allegations supported the fact that there was already a serious problem regarding a shortage of timber.
With respect that Deane referred to his fittings as 'iron dogs' hints that their design may have been similar to the simple iron clamps found on wrecks of Dutch colliers circa 1820.
