  USN Ships--USS Decatur (DD-341)
USS Decatur, a 1190-ton Clemson class destroyer built at the Mare Island Navy Yard, California, was commissioned in August 1922, the last (by a few days) of the more that 270 similar "flush-deck" destroyers constructed during the World War I era.
Decommissioned at the Philadelphia Navy Yard in July 1945, USS Decatur was sold for scrapping at the end of November 1945.
USS Decatur was named in honor of Commodore Stephen Decatur (1779-1820), one of the United States Navy's greatest heros and leaders of the first two decades of the 19th Century.

USS Augusta (CA-31) (originally CL-31) was a Northampton-class heavy cruiser of the United States Navy, notable for service in the Atlantic and Mediterranean during World War II, and for her occasional use as a presidential flagship carrying both Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman under wartime conditions.
Oiler USS Merrimack (AO-37) joined the task force on 28 April and fueled almost all of the ships, with Augusta's scout planes maintaining an air patrol during the dangerous fueling evolution.
On 7 May, in company with Decatur (DD-341), she headed for Casco Bay, where the end of the war in Europe found her, and returned to New York on 2 June.

The third Decatur (DD-341) was launched 29 October 1921 by Mare Island Navy Yard, sponsored by Mrs.
Decatur arrived at Norfolk 22 February 1937 for duty with the Training Detachment of the U.S. Fleet.
Arriving at Norfolk 2 July 1944 Decatur sailed from this port on escort and training duty in the Caribbean Sea until the last day of June 1945 when she entered Philadelphia Naval Shipyard for inactivation.

U.S.S. TOMICH (DE-242) was detached from training on December 17, to proceed to New York for radar repairs, returning to Fort Pond Bay area on December 19.
The U.S.S. TOMICH (DE-242) was detached from Barrier Patrol Station on 9 May by CTG 22.3 to rejoin Task Group 22.4 and depart for New York, N.Y. Moored to Pier at foot of 36th Street, Brooklyn, New York on May 11.
On September 20, 1946 the U.S.S. Tomich was decommissioned and November 1, 1972 was Stricken from the Naval records, sold for scrapping January 18, 1974.

Decatur is the 23rd of 35 Arleigh Burke Class destroyers currently authorized by Congress to be built.

On the 6th two other destroyers, USS Schenk (DD-159) and USS Babbitt (DD-128) were relieved, and USS Decatur (DD-341) and cutter Duane (WPG-33) joined the escort, which had met the 13-ship convoy ONSJ-94 on a southerly course to Iceland.
On the 6th Bibb, together with USS MacLeish (DD-220) was relieved of further escort duty and departed the convoy setting a course for Argentia, where she arrived on the 7th.
Escorted by USS Barry (APD-29) Bibb departed Norfolk on the 15th of February and arrived at Panama on the 22nd.

The USS CARD was launched on 21 February 1942 under the sponsorship of Mrs.
The first cruise of the CARD was on 14 May. She departed New York enroute to Casablanca with DD's Wollsey, Ludlow and Bristol.
Her memorial will be the bare-bones statistics filed away in the Naval Registry as she was sold for scrap the 12th of September 1970 and dismantled at Port Westward, Oregon.

We also added a light cruiser, USS Springfield (CL-66), which was converted in the late 1950s to a guided missile cruiser (CLG-7) and subsequently served as flagship for both the Sixth and Second Fleets.
Decatur used the former in his daring and successful attempt to destroyer the latter in February 1804, after Philadelphia was captured by the Tripolitans.
The cruiser is USS Mobile (CL-63), the destroyer is USS Broome (DD-210) and the oiler/airship tender is Patoka (AO-9).

The USS Card (CVE-11) (originally AVG-11 then later ACV-11, redesignated CVHE-11 12 June 1955, CVU-11 1 July 1958, T-CVU-11 and finally T-AKV-40 7 May 1959) was launched as AVG 11, 21 February 1942 by Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Corp., Tacoma, Washington, under a Maritime Commission contract; sponsored by Mrs.
Her airplanes added another submarine to their score on 31 October when they sank U-584, in 49°14' N., 31°55' W. The fifth and final kill of the cruise was made on 1 November by one of Card's escorts.
Schenck (DD-159) sank U-645 in 45°20' N., 21°40' W., but one of the other escorts Leary (DD 158) was sunk by the combined efforts of three submarines in 45°00' N., 22°00' W. Card dodged submarines all night with only Decatur (DD-341) as screen, while Schenck rescued survivors from Leary.

At 05.05 hours, U-275 fired a Gnat at the USS Leary (DD 158) (Cmdr James E. Kyes, lost) and hit her on the starboard side in the after engine room.
The survivors were picked up by the USS Schenck (DD 159), which found U-645 (Ferro) later the same day, evaded a torpedo and sank the U-boat with depth charges.

The USS KEARNY (DD-432) is torpedoed by U-568 southwest of Iceland at 2.00am.
She was one of five US destroyers which went to the aid of convoy SC-48, which had come under attack from a U-boat pack after losing half her Canadian escort in a gale.
The KEARNY was illuminated by the blazing vessels and suffered a direct hit from U-568 on the starboard side, but damage control limited flooding to the forward fire room enabling the ship to leave the danger area with power from the aft fire room.
