The second Denver (CL-58) was launched 4 April 1942 by New York Shipbuilding Corp., Camden, N.J.; sponsored by Miss L. Stapleton, daughter of the Mayor of Denver, and commissioned 16 October 1942 Captain R. Carney in command.
Denver covered the support landings on Cape Torokina on 10 and 11 November 1943, and 2 days later during a heavy air attack was hit by an aerial torpedo which knocked out all power and communications and killed 20 of her men.
Denver sailed from Port Purvis 6 September 1944 for the invasion of the Palaus.

USS Denvert, At Sea (NNS) -- USS Denver (LPD 9) provided medical assistance to a vessel in distress in the Persian Gulf on June 28 while conducting maritime operations in the 5th Fleet area of operations (AOO).
Denver responded quickly to this request and was on scene to provide medical assistance as soon as they could.
Denver, part of Bonhomme Richard Expeditionary Strike Group, departed San Diego for a regularly scheduled deployment in support of maritime operations and entered the 5th Fleet AOO on May 19.

USS John R. Pierce is named in honor of Lieutenant Commander John Reeves Pierce USN, who with total disregard for his own safety gallantly gave his life for his ship and his country in action with the enemy.
Doctors from the nearby cruiser USS Salem were taken by helicopter to the destroyer and then transferred the wounded to the cruiser at sea.
On 26 October Pierce tracked the Lebanese registered freighter Marucra and reported to the USS Joseph P. Kennedy that she had the vessel and was about to board and search her as previously ordered, when she was told to await the arrival of the Kennedy, which was named after the President’s brother.
