  USS Denver (CL-58) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The second USS Denver (CL-58) was launched 4 April 1942 by New York Shipbuilding Corp., Camden, N.J.; sponsored by Miss L. Stapleton, daughter of the Mayor of Denver; and commissioned 15 October 1942, Captain R. Carney in command.
Denver covered the support landings on Cape Torokina on 10 and 11 November 1943, and 2 days later during a heavy air attack was hit by an aerial torpedo which knocked out all power and communications and killed 20 of her men.
Denver sailed from Port Purvis 6 September 1944 for the invasion of the Palaus.

USS Arizona (BB-39), moored directly astern of Tennessee, was undergoing a period of upkeep from the repair ship USS Vestal (AR- 4), berthed alongside her.
On 1 February, Tennessee and Colorado, with Mobile and USS Louisville (CA 25), were back in their assigned area to the eastward and commenced firing at 0708.
Fire support was not required from her for the time being, but the increasing tempo of Japanese air activity in the area required her to place herself where her antiaircraft guns could assist in the defense of the assembled transports and cargo ships.

The second Denver (CL-58) was launched 4 April 1942 by New York Shipbuilding Corp., Camden, N.J.; sponsored by Miss L. Stapleton, daughter of the Mayor of Denver, and commissioned 16 October 1942 Captain R. Carney in command.
In the resulting Battle of Empress Augusta Bay on the night of 1-2 November, the American ships sank one enemy light cruiser and a destroyer and damaged two heavy criusers and two destroyers, while the four other enemy ships broke off the action and retired.
Denver sailed to aid in polishing off enemy cripples, aiding in sinking destroyer Asagumo early in the day on 25 October.

Oct 26 - Nov 5, 1944 — The cruiser USS Denver (CL 58), several carriers and destroyers were damaged or sunk by Japanese suicide planes off of Leyte.
July 29, 1945 — The tragedy of the Indianapolis: Two days after leaving Guam on an unescorted voyage to Leyte Gulf, the heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis (CA 35), Captain Charles B. McVay, III, was sunk by the Japanese submarine I-58, or it had been argued by a kaiten (piloted torpedo) released from the boat.
Some 800 to 850 men succeeded in abandoning the ship, but her SOS is unheard, and through a succession of tragic oversights, her loss went unnoticed until August 2, when a group of survivors was accidentally sighted by a patrol plane.

Subject: USS Denver - flag call sign I have been told that every ship in the USN during WWII would have something called a 4 letter call sign made up of 4 international semaphore flags flown vertically when entering or departing a port so as to identifying her.
I am specifically looking for the USS DENVER CL-58, and no crew members I have asked have been able to help me or know what I am talking about.
So, if anyone first knows what I am referring to and can explain how this system would work and then possibly give me a few examples, that would be great.

Chafing at the inactivity he pestered his comanding officer into a transfer and ended up on the USS Denver CL-58 in her Avaition unit, serving until the ship finally came home in later 1945 He was on board for most of the campaigns that swept the Japanese forces back to the gates of the empire.
I kept voluteering for combat sea duty and was told I had it after leaving the 3 mile limit.
Andy was wounded by ground fire during the battle to retake Corrigedor.
