Upon completion, DENVER was underway on 17 February for Subic Bay, Republic of the Philippines with Commander, Amphibious Squadron Seven embarked, and arrived in Subic Bay to moor outboard of the USS MONTICELLO.
DENVER sustained damage to the motor whale boat davit, one 50-foot dual yoke whip antenna, and the loss of the H frame and lower platform of the port accommodation ladder.
DENVER departed on the 14th deployment to the Western Pacific and was diverted one month into the cruise to the coast of Somalia in support of operation RESTORE HOPE in 1993.

USS Denver (LPD-9), an Austin-class amphibious transport dock, is the third ship of the fleet to bear this name.
Denver's keel was laid July 7, 1964 at Lockheed Shipbuilding and Construction Company, Seattle, Washington.
When the SS Columbia Eagle was commandeered by two mutinous crewmembers on March 14, 1970, the USS Denver was immediately dispatched to intercept and recapture the SS Columbia Eagle.

USS Denver (LPD 9) departed Pearl Harbor Navy Shipyard and IMF on July 27 "all smiles" and eager to return to its homeport in San Diego.
Denver was scheduled for availability at its homeport so the repairs at Pearl Harbor did not have to restore the ship to its original design.
Denver was returning from a six-month deployment and the ship’s force was anxious to be reunited with their families.

The Amphibious Transport Dock or LPD is used to transport and land Marines, their equipment and supplies by embarked landing craft or amphibious vehicles augmented by helicopters in amphibious assault.
Although their capabilities are less than those of the new LSD-41 class, the ships of the Austin class, built between 1965-1971, were considered sufficiently modern to have their service lives extended, and the Navy had planned to inaugurate an overhaul program for all 11 of them commencing in early 1988.
The LPD has a helicopter platform built over a well deck in the rear of the vessel and this large flight deck for helicopter operations can accomodate six CH-46 amphibious transport helicopters, or three CH-53 helicopters for transport.

As one of its last chores, the Denver was to have picked up 176 "Tigers" -- friends and family members -- who were supposed to ride back to San Diego on an orientation cruise.
