Diablo (SS-479) was launched 1 December 1944 by Portsmouth Navy Yard; sponsored by Mrs.
Diablo sailed to Key West, Fla., for antisubmarine warfare exercises, from 16 November to 9 December 1947, and operated from New Orleans for the training of naval reservists in March 1948.
Diablo arrived at Norfolk, her new home port, 6 June 1949, and alternated training cruises with duty at the Sonar School at Key West.

 LOST BOATS
USS Grayback (SS-208) was lost on 26-Feb-1944 with the loss of 80 officers and men when it was sunk near 25°47'N 128°45'E. USS Trout (SS-202) was lost on 29-Feb-1944 with the loss of 79 officers and men when it was sunk near 22°40'N 131°45'E, middle of Philippines Basin.
USS Golet (SS-361) was lost on 14-Jun-1944 with the loss of 82 officers and men when it was sunk near 41°04'N 14?°13'E. USS Growler (SS-215) was lost on 8-Jul-1944 with the loss of 84 officers and men when it was sunk in the South China Sea.
USS Diablo (SS-479) was lost with the loss of all hands in 1970 when it was sunk in Bay of Bengal (as Pakistani submarine Ghazi); possibly due to mine explosion.

USS DIABLO (SS-479) arrived at Pearl Harbor in the Hawaiian Islands from New London, CT, 21 July 1945.
DIABLO sailed to Key West, FL, for anti-submarine warfare exercises, from 16 November to 9 December 1947, and operated from New Orleans, LA, for the training of naval reservists in March 1948.
DIABLO was decommissioned and struck from the Navy list on 1 June 1964 and was sold to Pakistan to serve as Ghazi and was lost with all hand in 1970.

Milton served on USS SIRAGO SS-485 and qualified on her in December 1954.
Harry qualified in submarines on the USS SIRAGO SS-485 as a LT(jg) in November 1960.

Web Master Comment: Augustus was on duty with Pappy Graham in the Maneuvering Room during transit from Hong Kong to Japan during a Typhoon.
At the same time, the SS 349 took a tremendous roll to starboard and promptly flooded the two starboard engines through the exhaust lines.
Gus and Pappy almost died from smoke inhalation before they could be gotten out of the room.

Upon being accepted, he was enrolled in the Submarine School at the U.S. Naval Submarine Base, New London, Conn., and was graduated with the class of July 1960.
He was then assigned to the submarine U.S.S. Diablo (SS 479), in which he became qualified as a submariner on August 17, 1961, and was awarded his silver dolphins.
He was later selected for training in the nuclear power program, and successfully completed the year-long course at New London and Windsor Locks, Conn. On February 4, 1963, Richard was assigned to the submarine U.S.S. Thresher (SSN 593).

In 1963,the US Government approved the transfer of a Tench class submarine, the USS Diablo to the Pakistan Navy on a four-year lease.
With the Ghazi, the Pakistan navy enjoyed a clear advantage over the Indian Navy, which did not operate submarines as yet.

From 15 January to 27 April 1949 USS Diablo was based in the Canal Zone participating in fleet exercises and rendering services to surface units in the Caribbean.
*The USS Narwhal transited the Canal on May 2, 2001 on its way to Washington State where the submarine "graveyard" is located
