USS Dolphin, a brig, was the third ship of the United States Navy to be named for the aquatic mammal.
Dolphin cruised in Chinese waters until 22 July 1850 when she sailed for New York by way of the California coast and Cape Horn, arriving 24 June 1851.
Dolphin sailed from Boston on 16 October 1858 for duty on the Brazil Station, taking part in the expedition to Paraguay to obtain redress for the unprovoked firing upon the American ship Water Witch and to settle diplomatic difficulties, between December 1858 and February 1859.

The third USS Hornet was a brig-rigged sloop of war in the United States Navy.
She captured the privateer Dolphin on 9 July 1812 although the ship was recaptured again shortly afterwards.
Hornet assisted in the blockade of HMS Bonne Citoyenne in the harbor at Salvador, Brazil and sank HMS Peacock (18) on 24 February 1813.

The third Dolphin, a brig, was launched 17 June 1836 at New York Navy Yard, and commissioned 6 September 1836.
Dolphin lay at Norfolk until 13 November 1846 when she sailed to join the African Squadron, returning to New York 5 November 1847.

USS Hornet and Wasp were two blue-water fighting vessels ordered by Congress in the midst of President Thomas Jefferson's "gunboat navy" building program at the beginning of the nineteenth century.
En route, they were to rendezvous with USS Essex at Salvador, Brazil.
Lawrence "ran him close on board on the starboard quarter, and kept up such a heavy and well directed fire, that in less than 15 minutes she surrendered (being literally cut to pieces)." In recognition of this decisive action, Lawrence was given command of the frigate USS Chesapeake.

He was attached to the Frigate USS President, commanded by Commodore Rogers, and later became the latter's aide and signal officer.
In the naval engagement on Lake Champlain, which occurred not long thereafter, young Abbot bore an active and honorable part, and for his bravery was promoted (April 1st 1818) to a lieutenancy, and was presented with a sword by the United States Congress.
For a period commencing in 1818, he cruised the Mediterranean as an attaché to the USS Guerriere.

He was promoted to Commander in September 1855 and took command of the USS Vandalia in 1860 and was at the Cape of Good Hope when he learned of the outbreak of the Civil War.
In 1862, he was transferred to the West Gulf Blockading Squadron, and in April commanded the Corvette USS Oneida in the attacks under Flag Officer David G. Farragut on Fort Jackson and Fort St. Philip and the capture of New Orleans.

On 16 August 1822, Grampus gave chase to a brig flying Spanish colors, but which Lt. Gregory suspected was a pirate.
The brig struck her colors and Lt. Gregory discovered that she was Palmpra, a Puerto Rico-based pirate carrying the papers of a privateer as a subterfuge.
Grampus continued her duties in the protection of shipping in the Caribbean Sea and in the South Atlantic Ocean until August 1841, when she was detached from the African Squadron while Lying at Boston Navy Yard.

The conversion of the USS Merrimack to the CSS Virginia was completed at the Gosport Naval Shipyard in 1862.
One of these frigates, the USS Chesapeake, was contracted to be laid down at Gosport.
Besides its extensive warehouses and boatbuilding facilities, the shipyard maintained a store of nearly 2,000 cannon of various caliber (300 of which were the navy's newest smooth-bore Dahlgrens) with thousands of rounds of ammunition and tons of powder.
