The damage was severe, and Dorchester sunk in under 15 minutes, taking about 600 men with her out of a total crew of 902.
Dorchester is best remembered today for the story of the Four Chaplains who went down with her.

In a service aboard the USS New Jersey, the chapel gave four gold medallion awards to honor those who "have selflessly given of themselves for the benefit of others." The Tuskegee airmen received one of the awards.

The four received their Air Force Chaplain of the Year awards in Washington, D.C. The awards are given in honor of four World War II chaplains who gave away their lifejackets when the USS Dorchester was torpedoed by a German submarine, killing 672 Americans.
