USS Duluth (LPD-6), an Austin class amphibious transport dock, is the second ship of the United States Navy named for the city in Minnesota.
Duluth was laid down on 18 December 1963 by the New York Naval Shipyard.
Duluth was again underway 14 August 2000 for operations in the Indian Ocean as part of the Tarawa (LHA-1) Amphibious Ready Group (ARG).

USS DULUTH was the third amphibious transport dock in the AUSTIN - class and the first ship in her class to be decommissioned.
Arriving in Lagoney Gulf on 22 October, DULUTH operated as a fuel stop and ready deck ship for helicopters during three days of relief operations in a swath of devastated barrios and villages 80 by 20 miles wide and including the cities of Virac and Naga.
DULUTH participated in Maritime Interdiction Operations (MIO) in the northern Arabian Gulf in October and early November as tensions rose over Iraqi violations of the 1991 ceasefire agreements.

ABOARD USS DULUTH (NNS) -- USS Duluth (LPD 6) was presented with the Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendation during an awards ceremony on the ship's flight deck Feb. 27.
Duluth and her crew were awarded the honor for supporting Coast Guard Port Security Units (PSU) during Operation Iraqi Freedom from March to May 2003.
Duluth and its complement of more than 400 Sailors were responsible for repairing power sources on each oil platform and repairing mobile command and control communications systems while positioned more than 50 miles from the nearest coastal support.

Named for: The city of Duluth, Minnesota, which itself bore the name of Sir Daniel Greysolon De Lhut [Duluth] (1636-1710), the explorer who raised the French flag at the westernmost point of Lake Superior in 1679.
The first Duluth was a light cruiser (CL-87), commissioned on 18 September 1944 and decommissioned on 24 June 1949, that received two battle stars for her late World War II service in the Pacific theater.
In the spring, the LPD sailed north to Vancouver, British Columbia, for a port visit on 13 April.

I, too, am looking for the best way to get 6 of us from the airport to the hotel, and then to the port the next day.
HAL transfers are 12 per person and then you have to wait to get loaded and unloaded and deal with all that confusion at the airport.
