Henry Talmage Elrod (27 September 1905 – 23 December 1941) was a Marine aviator.
On 4 December 1941, Captain Elrod flew to Wake Island with twelve aircraft, twelve pilots, and the ground crew of Major Paul Putnam's VMF-211 fighter squadron.
USS Elrod (FFG-55) is named in his honor.

USS Gary (FFG-51), an Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate, is a ship of the United States Navy, named for Commander Donald A. Gary (1903–1977), who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism during the fires on USS Franklin (CV-13) on 19 March 1945.

USS Elrod (FFG 55) returned to Naval Station Norfolk on Sept. 17, 2004, from a four-and-a-half month deployment in support of the global war on terrorism (GWOT).
Major Elrod’s service as a Marine Officer is symbolized by the unsheathed Mameluke sword, which also draws attention to the fact the he was among the first to engage the Japanese in World War II.

USS Elrod joined with the Italian and Turkish Navies to conduct Boarding Drills, further honing the skills, which are vital to the ship's purpose during her deployment.
USS Elrod also has an automated 76-mm gun, two anti-submarine torpedo launchers, and a "Vulcan-Phalanx" 20-mm gun system, capable of detecting and tracking inbound anti-ship missiles and firing 4500 rounds per minute until they are destroyed.

USS Elrod aids Iranian vessel By LT Dan Salmore, USS Elrod Public Affairs ARABIAN GULF (NWSA) -- USS Elrod (FFG 55) came to the aid of an Iranian vessel in the Arabian Gulf on Dec. 30 while en route to Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), for a port visit.
Elrod crew members were unable to contact Khavri by radio, so they contacted the UAE coast guard and remained in the vicinity until daybreak.
Elrod is expected to return from deployment in March 1996.

COMDESRON 28 embarked in USS PETERSON after her arrival 18 May. During TACDEVEX, USS PETERSON, USS ELROD, and USS OBANNON were joined by USS KLAKRING (FFG 42) and USS CLARK (FFG 11), and were opposed by German diesel submarines and U.S. submarines in a USW "Freeplay" scenario designed to simulate actual combat conditions.
COMDESRON 28 conducted intensive training of the USS OBANNON and USS ELROD crews in all warfare areas during the transit, especially in Maritime Interception Operations (MIO), which would be the primary duty of the ships in the Arabian Gulf while operating as part of the MEF.
