The first Hornet was a ten-gun sloop commissioned in 1775, and served in the American Revolutionary War.
The seventh Hornet (CV-8), along with the Enterprise (CV-6), launched the Doolittle Raid in 1942, fought at the Battle of Midway, but was sunk during the Battle of Santa Cruz[?] on 26 October 1942.
The eighth Hornet (CV/CVA/CVS-12) was originally named USS Kearsarge, but renamed in honor of CV-8 and active through the rest of World War II.

Enterprise was a Continental Navy sloop-of-war that served in Lake Champlain during the American Revolutionary War.
The Enterprise was, at first, the most significant warship in the Lake Champlain squadron — which was charged with maintaining American control of the lake early in the war — and at times she acted as flagship for Colonel Arnold.
During the British advance prior to the Battle of Saratoga, Enterprise was one of five vessels assigned to duty convoying bateaux in the evacuation of Ticonderoga.

Re-armed with 6 deck guns and 10 swivels, and given a motley crew of 50, the tiny Enterprise was sent south to defend American interests on Lake Champlain where, for a time she served as Arnold's flagship.
The Enterprise was again in action against the British on the 26th of October 1776 but less than a year later, in July 1777, during the evacuation of Fort Ticonderoga, fate finally caught up with the little sloop.
