Gleaves class destroyer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
USS Aaron Ward (DD-483), one of eleven Gleaves-class destroyers lost during World War II.
They were extremely similar to the Benson-class destroyers (DD-421), and were often referred to as the BENSON/GLEAVES class, distinguishable only by the shape of their stacks— the Gleaves class had round stacks, and the Benson class had flat-sided stacks.
Initially they were known as the Livermore class destroyers because the design was standardized with USS Livermore (DD-429), after a requested design change - increasing temperature from 700° to 825° for follow-on ships from Gibbs and Cox.

Ericsson remained in the Mediterranean for patrol and escort assignments until 11 November, when she sailed from Oran to the Azores on escort duty.

 US People--Ericsson, John (1803-1889)
Ericsson left the Army in 1826 and moved to England, where he pursued a variety of engineering projects, among them the use of screw propellers on ships, the development of extraordinarly large guns and the creation of engines driven by hot air instead of steam.
The outbreak of the American Civil War brought John Ericsson back into formal contact with the Navy, when he designed and produced USS Monitor, a revolutionary armored ship carrying her guns in a rotating turret.
Ericsson continued his work on maritime and naval technology after the Civil War, producing ships for foreign navies and experimenting with submarines, self-propelled torpedoes and heavy ordnance.

Meanwhile, the escort carrier USS Croatan (CVE-14) had been hunting weather boats for nearly a month and had already sunk U-488 and U-490.
That U-boat, however, proved so elusive that Croatan's crew nicknamed their prey "Moby Dick." On June 17, after ten days of hunting, "huff-duff" (HF/DF, high frequency direction finding) picked up a weather report from the U-853 only 30 miles away.
On April 23, 1945 U-853 sank USS Eagle 56 (PE-56), which was towing targets for United States Navy dive-bombers just off the coast of Maine.
