  USS Ethan Allen (SSBN-608)
USS Ethan Allen (SSBN-608), lead ship of her class, was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for Ethan Allen.
To make room for the new Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines within the limitations of SALT II, Ethan Allen's missile tubes (and those of other earlier ballistic missile submarines) were disabled and she was redesignated an attack submarine with hull classification symbol SSN-608 on 1 September 1980.
Ethan Allen was decommissioned on 31 March 1983 and stricken from the Naval Vessel Registry two days later.

The shot was made during the 1962 atomic tests and hit "right in the pickle barrel." The captain of the 608 was Paul Lacy, and ADM Levering Smith was aboard.

I was Commanding Officer of USS POGY (SSN-647), a STURGEON class SSN homeported in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, from 1973 to 1977.
USS CARBONERO (SS-337) was a typical World War II type diesel submarine that was later modernized and equipped with a streamlined superstructure and a snorkle.
CARBONERO participated in the 1962 Nuclear Tests in the Central Pacific off Christmas Island and Johnston Island entitled "Operation Dominic." She specifically was on hand for the detonation of a warhead from a Polaris missile fired from the USS ETHAN ALLEN (SSBN-608).

Back in 1962, as a 21 year-old seaman, I was serving on the USS Samuel N. Moore (DD-747), a naval destroyer, assigned to Destroyer Division 232, which was home-ported in Long Beach, CA.
This consisted of a nuclear warhead fired from the submarine USS Ethan Allen (SSBN-608).
The task group's responsibility was to exercise direct operational control of participating naval units in the vicinity of the launch point, assume SAR responsibility in the launch area, conduct surveillance of the launch hazard area, provide range safety missile tracking facilities, and to provide technical photography of the missile launch.

Allen demanded surrender from the British commander "in the name of the Great Jehovah and the Continental Congress." Subsequently, as a member of the army of General Philip John Schuyler, he rendered valuable service in the American military expedition against Canada.
