Milo Burnell Evarts, born 3 September 1913 in Ruthton Minnesota, enlisted in the Naval Reserve 31 August 1940, and was commissioned 12 June 1941 as ensign.
Disregarding the danger of explosion from the fires which broke out in the gun turret of which he was in charge, Evarts stood to his station until killed.
During the homeward bound passage of this same voyage, on 29 May 1944, Evarts was detached from the convoy to aid Block Island (CVE-21) and Barr (DE 576), both of whom had been torpedoed.

Evarts was launched on 7 December 1942 at the Boston Navy Yard in Boston, Massachusetts, as BDE-5, intended for transfer to Britain.

USS Mason, a 1140-ton Evarts class destroyer escort, was constructed at the Boston Navy Yard, Massachusetts.
USS Mason was named in honor of Ensign Newton Henry Mason, USNR, a pilot with Fighting Squadron Three, who was killed in action during the Battle of Coral Sea, 7-8 May 1942.

The first Destroyer Escort that was commissioned was the USS Brennan DE 13 on Jan 20, 1943, at Mare Island, Vallejo, Calif. the DEs would supply the United States Navy with the economical destroyer type ship which could be mass produced using less expensive material.
The USS MASON, the first Navy ship with a predominantly Negro crew, departed Charleston 14 June escorting a convoy bound for Europe, The MASON would escort convoys six times across the Atlantic.

Evarts (DE-5) was launched 7 December 1942 by Boston Navy Yard as BDE-S, intended for transfer to Great Britain; retained for use in the U.S. Navy, and commissioned 15 April 1943, Lieutenant Commander C. Henriques, USNR, in command.
She arrived at the given position to find Block Island had sunk, but screened Barr, under tow, to safety at Casablanca.
A second voyage to Bizerte was uneventful, as were the one to Palermo and the three to Oran which followed.

 USS William C. Miller DE-259
Sailors on board the destroyer USS Ramage (DDG 61) man the rails while escorting USS Constitution, the world's oldest commissioned warship afloat, underway in Massachusetts Bay as the Navy's Blue Angels Flight Demonstration Squadron fly over in salute.
The Navy, in what seems to be in error gave credit to the William C. Miller for sinking the I-6, but due to recent research information presented by "combinedfleet.com", it seems to have been the I-55.
After dropping the Indianapolis off at Guam the destroyer escort paused briefly at Eniwetok, in the Marshalls, on the 24th August before she pushed on for the Hawaiian Islands, arriving at Pearl Harbor on 2 September.

The Finnegan is named for the William Michael Finnegan, the Chief Radio Electrician of the U.S.S Oklahoma who was killed in action on Dec.7th, 1941 at Pearl Harbor.
On May 17 they were attacked by group of 150 Kamakazis, where the Finnegan revieved very minor damage from falling debris off of a Japanese plane that had been shot down.
On August 15 1945, while in Manilla Bay, the crew of the U.S.S Finnegan recieved news of the japanese surrender.

 USS KIDD Veterans Memorial -- Calendar of Events
A memorial service will be held aboard the USS KIDD (DD-661) to honor the memory of the thirty-eight (38) crewmen killed when a Japanese kamikaze struck the ship off the coast of Okinawa on this date in 1945.
The USS KIDD is proud to serve as host to portions of the Silver Wings - Arnold Air Society Convention on October 28, 2006, in downtown Baton Rouge.
A memorial service will be held aboard the USS KIDD (DD-661) to honor the memory of those servicemen killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on this date in 1941.

 Stars & Stripes: New Arleigh Burke destroyer is third USS Mason
It subsequently was renamed the Broadwater, and in mid-October 1941, while escorting a convoy to the south of Iceland, the HMS Broadwater was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine.
The second time the name was used, the Navy named its 1,140-ton Evarts class destroyer in honor of Ensign Newton Henry Mason, a pilot killed in action during the Battle of Coral Sea in May 1942.
The USS Mason was decommissioned in October 1945 and was sold for scrapping in March 1947.
