  USS Flatley (FFG-21) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
USS Flatley (FFG-21), thirteenth ship of the Oliver Hazard Perry class of guided-missile frigates, was named for Vice Admiral James H. Flatley.
Ordered from Bath Iron Works on 28 February 1977 as part of the FY77 program, Flatley was laid down on 13 November 1979, launched on 15 May 1980, and commissioned on 20 June 1981.
Decommissioned on 11 May 1996, she was leased to Turkey on 28 August 1997 as that nation's TCG Giresun (F 491).

Honoring the memory of Vice Admiral James H. Flatley, who distinguished himself with extraordinary heroism and conspicuous courage during the Battle of the Coral Sea, FLATLEY was constructed by Bath Iron works in Bath, Maine, and commissioned on June 20, 1981.
The red lion, adapted from the Flatley Coat of Arms, is a symbol of strength and courage.
He carries a scythe in reference to Admiral Flatley's command of a fighter squadron, the "Grim Reapers," aboard the USS ENTERPRISE (CVN 65).

On Sept. 11, as our nation was rocked by the terrorist attacks, USS Carl Vinson was rounding the tip of India en route the Arabian Gulf to enforce the no-fly zone over Southern Iraq in support Operation Southern Watch.
Completing her maintenance / overhaul period in record-setting time, USS Carl Vinson and crew set sail in September to conduct sea trials and once again announced to their chain of command that they were ready for fleet operations.

USS Tarawa (LHA 1) Earns Admiral Flatley Safety Award ON BOARD USS TARAWA (NNS) -- Sailors from USS TARAWA (LHA 1) have earned the Admiral Flatley Safety Award, which is presented for outstanding achievements in operational capability and safety.
At the beginning of 1992, USS Tarawa crew members began preparing for an upcoming deployment to the Western Pacific by completing restricted maintenance availabilities, conducting deck landing qualifications for the embarked Air Combat Element and numerous other pre-deployment requirements.
In May, USS Tarawa deployed as the flagship for Commander, Amphibious Squadron One (COMPHIBRON ONE), with 21 Marine helicopters and six Harrier jets, and conducted flight operations 117 of the 182 days deployed.

While I was prepared in advance that she 'was in real bad shape', and I expected it to some extent, it really hit home as I was leaving: this was it.
The USS Spiegel Grove (LSD-32) is at Baybridge Enterprises in Portsmouth, VA. Work continues under this new contractor and is expected to last 120 days or so....possibly, she could be underway to her final port of call in May of this year.

On April 11, the USS CONOLLY was tasked with escorting the USS Guam (LPH 9), USS Trenton (LPD 14) and USS Portland (LSD 37) to Liberia from the Adriatic Sea in support of JTF Assured Response.
USS Guam, USS Trenton (LPD 14), USS Portland (LSD 37) and USS CONOLLY (DD-979) were conducting routine training when they were directed to the coastal waters of Liberia.
USS CONOLLY (DD 979) and its embarked helicopter detachment, the Swamp Foxes of HSL-44 Detachment One, recently passed the midpoint of a scheduled six month deployment with the George Washington (CVN 73) Battle Group.

Aboard USS Peleliu - He was born the second of 10 children who grew up in a three bedroom home in Waller, Texas.
In 1989, after completing an executive officer tour aboard USS Aubrey Fitch (FFG-34), Watson was assigned as the director of the Chief of Naval Operations' broadened opportunity for officer selection and training program in San Diego.
After a sea tour as commanding officer of USS Flatley (FFG-21), and a shore tour in Manama, Bahrain, on the staff of Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Central Command, Watson again furthered his education, attending the National War College at Fort McNair, in Washington.

He and his crew swapped USS Estocin (FFG 15) for Morison so they could remain in their Norfolk homeport and the new crew of Estocin could remain in their homeport of Mayport, Fla. Still, Morison's legacy was not lost on him.
This is not the Morison, but its sister ship, the USS Lewis B. Puller (FFG 23), which is also a short-hulled variant of the Perry class, same as the Morison.
A few years ago the USS Saratoga put a missile through the bridge of a Turkish warship (also a former U.S. Navy vessel).

Chief Ohree joined the Navy on 1 January 1983, in Richmond, VA. After completing boot camp in Great Lakes, IL in April 1983, he reported to his first duty station aboard the USS Flatley (FFG-21) out of Mayport, FL.
Chief Ohree's tour was adventurous and challenging, making three Mediterranean deployments from 1983 to 1986, departing from the USS Flatley in August 1986.
After a successful tour, Chief Ohree departed the USS Eisenhower in April 1999 and reported to the UVA NROTC Unit for duty.
