Development of the "Fletchers" began in October 1939; they were to be larger and more versatile than the "Benson" and "Livermore" classes, the last US Navy destroyers built under the limitations of the London Treaty.
USS "Fletcher" herself was launched June 30, 1942, at the Federal Shipbuilding Yard in Kearney, New Jersey.
USS "Fletcher" continued her good luck through the rest of the war, participating in many battles, and bringing her crew home safe.

Fletcher was assigned to the battleship USS Maine when it blow up in Havana Harbor (was absent that night) triggering the Spanish-American War in 1898.
Fletcher (DD-445) commissioned 30 June 1942 and arrived at Noumea, New Caledonia, 5 October 1942 from the east coast, and at once began escort and patrol duty in the Guadalcanal operation, bombarding Lunga Point 30 October.
Fletcher herself was modernized and fought in Korea and Vietnam before decommissioning in 1969.

USS FLETCHER was launched at the Federal Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in Kearny (NJ) on May 3, 1942 and was commissioned on June 30, 1942.
The onset of the Korean War saw FLETCHER take on the role of carrier escort and shore bombardment specialist, alternating between cruises off the Korean peninsula and patrols of the Taiwan Straits, blunting the threat of a Chinese Communist invasion of Formosa.
USS FLETCHER would be stricken from the Navy List on August 1, 1969 and as scrapped in 1972.

The USS Fletcher was the lead ship of the most famous class of destroyers in the history of the United States Navy.
Fletcher played an important part in the surface action off Guadalcanal November13, firing guns and torpedoes in the general melee which sank two Japanese destroyers and damaged battleship Hiei, later sent to the bottom by carrier and Marine aircraft.
Fletcher reached Manus, in the Admiralties, October 9, 1944 from Humboldt Bay to prepare for the invasion of Leyte, for which she sortied 12 October screening transports.

The first USS Fletcher was launched 3 May 1942 by Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Co.
Fletcher arrived at Nouméa, New Caledonia, 5 October 1942 from the east coast, and at once began escort and patrol duty in the Guadalcanal operation, bombarding Lunga Point 30 October.
Fletcher retired to replenish at Espiritu Santo arriving the day after the battle, and after patrolling against submarines off Nouméa, sortied 30 November 1942 with a force of cruisers and destroyers to intercept a force of enemy transports and destroyers expected to attempt a reinforcement of Guadalcanal that night.

Upon leaving the shipyard in June 1963, USS NICHOLAS began a heavy schedule of operations in preparation for Refresher Training, which began on 22 July 1963 and lasted for 5 weeks.
USS NICHOLAS completed her eighteen month competitive cycle on 31 December 1963 and was nominated for and awarded the Battle Efficiency “E” for Destroyer Squadron TWENTY FIVE.

Also on D-1, USS La Vallette ("La Vadilly") was operating in support of minesweepers in the North Channel, and fouled a mine herself, sustaining major damage and losing six dead and 23 wounded.

The rest of the kit is the same as the earlier Tamiya USS Fletcher kit.
While this kit falls short of the new tooling that went into the new Tamiya USS Missouri, it is still a great value and when you consider it is half the price of competing DD's it is still a great kit for the money and great starting point for a late war Fletcher.

The USS Hopewell had originally gone to the rescue of this stricken craft but enemy shells landing on the destroyer had killed many men, it stopped the rescue efforts and had to retreat, passing us with its dead readily visible.
In passing, another destroyer, USS La Vallette (DD-448) was ordered to finish firing at the still floating mines in the area we had left earlier, but the ship hit an uncut mine, opening a huge hole in its starboard side.
A second destroyer, USS Radford (DD 446) was dispatched to rescue it, but then, also hit a mine in the same forward fireroom, starboard side as the La Vallette.

Many of the survivors of the sinking of the USS DeHaven DD-469 owe their lives to the rescue efforts of the ships and sailors that accompanied them on that fateful day February 1, 1943.
Most of the severely injured were immediately taken aboard the USS Nicholas DD-449 and put ashore at Lunga Point, Guadalcanal.
The less seriously injured were taken aboard the USS Fletcher DD-445 from the two LCT's that plucked the survivors from the water.

Frank Friday Fletcher, born 23 November 1856 in Oskaloosa, Iowa, was a member of the Naval Academy class of 1875.
He served on the General Board until retiring on 23 November 1919 earning the Distinguished Service Medal for his meritorious service during World War I. Twice recalled for temporary active duty, he served in 1925 on a board studying the most effective use of aircraft in national defense.
Out on patrol 11 February 1943, Fletcher was alerted by a smoke float dropped by a plane from Helena (CL-50), and sped to attack and sink Japanese submarine RO-102.
