Gambier Bay received four battle stars for service in World War II and shared in the award of the Presidential Unit Citation to "Taffy 3" for extraordinary heroism in the battle off Samar.
Gambier Bay gave close air support to the initial landings of Marines on Saipan 15 June 1944, destroying enemy gun emplacements, troops, tanks, and trucks.
Gambier Bay continued close ground support operations at Tinian (19-31 July), then turned her attention to Guam, where she gave identical aid to invading troops until 11 August.

At 0815, GAMBIER BAY suffered her first enemy hit from a heavy cruiser, an eight inch shell in her flight deck aft which left a six by eight foot hole in her flight deck.
GAMBIER BAY has the dubious distinction of being the only American Carrier ever sunk by enemy gunfire.

The first CVE was USS Long Island (CVE 1), converted from a Maritime Commission freighter.
This operational phase was so successful that three Jeeps — USS Core (CVE 13), USS Card (CVE 11) and USS Bogue (CVE 9) — and their escorting destroyers sank a total of 16 U-boats and 8 milch cows in a period of 98 days.
