Gato class submarines were successful boats that proved to be fast, strong, well armed, and suited to the long-range patrols necessary to fight in the Pacific.
USS Croaker shows a severe loss of her World War II integrity and for this reason does not appear to meet the criteria for designation as a National Historic Landmark.
USS Croaker is missing two of her forward torpedo tubes, one complete diesel engine, parts of two other diesel engines, both periscopes, and much of her internal equipment.

The USS Gato was first-in-class diesel attack submarine laid down in Groton CT in October 1940.
The 1941 Gato had an enclosed bridge for surfaced operations but this was removed to facilitate a gun deck platform at the front of the conning tower.
The rear gun deck of the 1941 Gato also had high walls but these were cut down to the upper decal level to provide a clear field of fire for the rear upper deck gun.

The USS Cavalla is berthed in Seawolf Park, Galveston, Texas as a memorial to the lost submarine USS Seawolf.
Cavalla was a Gato class fleet sub, designed and built in the summer of 1943 by the Electric Boat Company and launched on November 14, 1943.
She was commissioned on Feb. 29, 1944, the first "leap year" boat built by E.B. On June 19, 1944, on her maiden patrol, she sank the 30,000 ton aircraft carrier Shokaku (veteran of Pearl Harbor and Battle of Coral Sea).

During this period she conducted five war patrols ranging from the Kuriles and Aleutian Islands in the Northern Pacific, duty in the screening force during the Battle of Midway in the Central Pacific, and finally to patrols around Truk and the Solomon Islands in the Southwest Pacific.
On February 5, 1944 USS Gato surfaced in Open Bay near the village of Maitanakunai, and dropped them at Finschafen.
Gato's vigilance in patroling the north entrance to Bouganville Sound and her aggressive attacks during her Fourth through Eighth Patrols in the Solomons, Bismarck Sea, New Guinea and Truk areas earned for her a Presidential Unit Citation and the nickname "The Goalkeeper" from Admiral William F. Halsey, the area commander.

Gato discovered a live depth charge on her deck at the same time that two enemy escorts headed in her direction were sighted.

The second USS Gato (SSN 615) was a Thresher-class submarine known as the "Goal Keeper" or the "Black Cat." The contract to build her was awarded to the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Corporation on 9 July 1960 and her keel was laid down on 15 December 1961 at Groton, Connecticut.
On 15 November 1969, Gato collided with the Soviet submarine K-19 in the Barents Sea at a depth of some 200 feet.
Gato was decommissioned and stricken on 25 April 1996 and disposed of by submarine recycling.

USS Clamagore does not appear to meet the criteria for designation because of the loss of her World War II integrity and her lack of service in the Pacific.
USS Torsk appears to meet the criteria for designation because she is the only surviving Tench class submarine that saw service in the Pacific.
USS Torsk is particularly significant in that she fired the last torpedoes of World War II and is credited with sinking the last Japanese combat ships to be lost in the war.

The main difference between the Balao and Gato class boats was the thickness of the pressure hull.
Gato boats had 11/16-inch plate, 27.5 pounds per square foot hulls, as compared to the Balao's more robust 7/8-inch, 35 pounds per square foot.
Consequently, the Gato boat's safe diving depth was three hundred feet; the Balao boat's was an additional 100 feet, for four hundred feet maximum.

The modification of the Gato class fleet sub into the earlier Tambor class subs (of which the Gato class was an improved version) is very simple, both requiring the addition of this fairwater set to make them a prewar boat.
The P and S class subs require a reshaped bow and a hull which needs to be shortened by 5'3" (0.35" or 9mm in scale), whereas the Tambor class bow is correctly shaped but the hull needs to be shortened by 4'7" (0.31" or 8mm in scale).

The gun set provided is the same as the early Gato outfit, as are the periscope shears.
One minor quibble is that the radar on the shears does not represent the late model SJ surface radar in later war position or configuration, as would be appropriate with this stage of cutdown tower.
I’m currently doing a Balao submarine (USS Blenny) for one of her former crewmembers, and I have a feeling this will not be my last Balao model by a long shot.

During her fourth war patrol (13 January 1942-26 February 1943), Gato torpedoed and sank transport Kenkon Maru 21 January; cargo ship Nichiun Maru on 29 January; and cargo ship Suruga Maru on 15 February--all off New Georgia, Solomon Islands.
During a submerged radar attack approach 4 April 1943, between Tanga and Lihir Islands, she was shaken so violently by three exploding depth charges that she returned to Brisbane for temporary repairs 11 to 20 April.
Gato landed more Australian commandos at Toep Harbor 20 May, transported more evacuees to Ramos Island, and then reconnoitered off Tarawa in the Gilbert Islands before putting in at Pearl Harbor 6 June 1943.

The USS Bluegill (SS-242), one of the Navy's Gato class of submarine, hid beneath the shroud of blue Pacific water.
In November, 1984, after a month of intensive salvage work, the 300 crew members of the salvage vessels USS Brunswick and USS Beaufort successfully raised the Bluegill back into the light of the sun.
This was a sad day for divers, as the Bluegill was prepared for her final voyage.
