USS Georgia (SSBN-729), a Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine, was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for the fourth state.
The contract to build her was awarded to the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Corporation in Groton, Connecticut on 20 February 1976 and her keel was laid down on 7 April 1979.
The USS Georgia is mentioned in the 1996 movie Independence Day but the film footage of the submarine was not of the Georgia but another submarine.

Two ships of the United States Navy (and two of the Confederate States Navy) have been named USS Georgia and CSS Georgia in honor of the fourth state.
The first USS Georgia (BB-15), a Virginia-class battleship, was provided training and convoy escort service during World War I, and became a transport to bring troops home after the war ended.
The second USS Georgia (SSBN-729), the fourth Ohio-class submarine, no longer serves as a ballistic missile submarine, but will be converted into a guided missile submarine (SSGN).

After 18 years of faithful service to the submarine fleet, USS Georgia returned to Naval Submarine Base Bangor from her last and 65th strategic deterrent patrol marking the end of its career as a Fleet Ballistic Missile submarine (SSBN) on Oct. 30, 2003.
Following Georgia's return to Strategic Weapons Facility, Pacific (SWFPAC) the Georgia was involved in an accident that involved one of its Trident I C4 missiles.
The submarine is one of four Ohio-class submarines (including USS Ohio, USS Florida, and USS Michigan) being converted from SSBNs to SSGNs.

This is the USS Thresher, SSN 593, tragically lost in an implosion accident in 1963, carrying 16 officers, 96 enlisted men and 17 civilian technicians to their final resting place in 8500 feet of water.

USS Georgia (SSGN 729) arrived in Kings Bay Nov. 10 for a brief visit on her way to Norfolk Naval Shipyard, where she will begin the multi-million dollar process that will take the submarine from a ballistic missile carrier, or SSBN, into a guided-missile submarine, or SSGN.
USS Georgia is one of four SSBNs scheduled for the conversion, which involves modifying the 24 40-foot-long Trident launch tubes to carry 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles, installing diver lock-out chambers and landing pads for dry deck shelters and advanced SEAL delivery system, and adding extra berthing and storage for 66 special forces personnel.
USS Florida is scheduled to arrive in Kings Bay in 2006.
