The history of the Excelsior class tends to consist of extremes.
Initially fitted with a Transwarp drive and proclaimed "the great experiment", the ship had an ignoble start when its engines failed when it was called into action to prevent the theft of the USS Enterprise.
Although this was due to deliberate sabotage, it transpired that the Excelsior had been saved from a major disaster; engineers working to correct the damage discovered a series of flaws in the Transwarp drive which, had it been used, would have caused a nacelle implosion which would have destroyed the ship.

 Excelsior Classes Types 1,2 & 3
Nearly 17 years in development the Excelsior Class was a huge success - eventually, and managed to spawn nearly nearly two hundred vessels (in several variations) over a period of some 50 years.
The class' overall success is demonstrated by how many were built over this period, and a second, slightly enhanced variation was introduced in around 2293 with the USS Enterprise-B.
Ranging from where they do, it would suggest that this one variant was built over a period of at least 50 years, if we take actual the chronological properties of registry designations into account.

 Saavik
After graduating, as a fresh Lieutenant Saavik was on her cadet cruise on the USS Enterprise with Admiral James T. Kirk and Captain Spock when Kirk's old enemy Khan Noonien Singh sought revenge and attacked the Enterprise.
Saavik and David Marcus (son of Admiral James T. Kirk), subsequently were assigned to the research vessel USS Grissom to study the newly formed Genesis Planet.
Had Saavik been included, this might have created a continuity issue as the episode as produced establishes that the USS Bozeman had become trapped in the time eddy in the year 2278, before the events of Wrath of Khan which is known based upon on-screen dialogue to have taken place some time after 2283.
