Growler, a wooden sloop, was purchased as Experiment on Lake Ontario during 1812, and was first commanded by Sailing Master M. Mix.
Growler took part in attacks on Kingston, York, and Fort George and the engagement with the British squadron 7 to 11 August 1813.
Recaptured 5 October 1813, Growler was libelled and purchased by the Navy, rejoining the squadron.

GROWLER was the ship commanded by Cmdr. Howard W. Gilmore on her fourth patrol when, mortally wounded by machine gun fire after GROWLER had rammed a patrol vessel, he ordered the ship submerged while he lay on the bridge.
GROWLER’s second patrol was off Formosa; where she sank a large tanker, two medium freighters, a transport and a sampan.
GROWLER covered the Marianas, the Eastern Philippines and the Luzon Strait areas on her ninth patrol, and was credited with sinking a large tanker and damaging a destroyer escort.

 USS HARDHEAD (SS-365) - SHIP'S HISTORY
USS Hardhead was decommissioned on 10 May 1946 and was placed in the Reserve Fleet at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard at Vallejo, California.
USS Hardhead was placed in commission in reserve on 6 February 1952, and, upon her arrival at the United States Naval Submarine Base at New London/Groton, Connecticut, for conversion to a "Guppy" submarine, was placed out of commission on 22 May 1952.
USS Hardhead (SS-365) joined the United States Atlantic Fleet for training exercises and tactical drills in the years that followed, operating mainly in the Caribbean and off the east coast of the United States.

Operating out of Pearl Harbor, Growler was one of seven submarines assigned picket duty north and west of the islands as part of the Hawaii defense force during the early phases of the Battle of Midway in June 1942.
Perhaps inadvertently, Growler hit the Japanese adversary amidships at 17 knots, heeling the submarine 50 degrees, bending sideways 18 feet of her the bow, and disabling the forward torpedo tubes.

Early in November 1944, USS Growler I (SS-215), USS Hake (SS-256) and USS Hardhead (SS-365) were operating together west of the Philippine group as a coordinated search and attack group under the command of CDR T.B. Oakley, Jr., commanding Growler.
In the cases of USS Tullibee (SS-284) and USS Tang (SS-306), where survivors' statements leave little doubt that destruction was by their own torpedoes, the Japanese ships which picked up survivors claimed to have sunk the submarines themselves.
