The China through which Guam sailed was racked by war from the day she commissioned - first, civil war as Communists battled Nationalists for control of the ancient nation; and then, total war as Japanese forces sought to win and control China and her vast resources.
Guam also evacuated American civilians from Wuhu to Hankow in December 1937 in front of approaching Japanese forces, and a year later served as station ship at Standard Vacuum Oil installations in Hankow to protect American lives and property while Chinese and Japanese armies clashed nearby.
Guam and her sister gunboats, remaining doggedly on station and conducting daily "Repel-Boarders" drills, were a reassuring sight for American civilians.

Guam participated in may evaluations and tests throughout the next few years and on July 1, 1974, Guam completed the ISCS evaluation and was redesignated Amphibious Assault Ship.
While deployed to the Mediterranean in May, 1982, Guam was sent to the coast of Lebanon to prepare for possible evacuation operationsor intervention in the war raging between the Israelies and opposing Palestinian and Syrian forces.
Guam was instrumental in the recovery of one of the rocket booster nose cones which was able to be loaded on to the flight deck and returned for inspection.

USS GUAM was the fourth IWO JIMA - class Amphibious Assault Ship (Helicopter) and the second ship in the Navy named after the largest island of the Marianas group.
The SINKEX was conducted by the USS JOHN F. (CV 67) Battle Group and the exact location was 031° 14' 22.0" North, 071° 16' 35.0" West.
An LCM-6 from USS TRENTON (LPD 14) carrying marines and sailors from shore back to TRENTON and USS GUAM, collided with a merchant vessel which was entering the port of Barcelona.

She was directed to join the battleship USS Idaho (BB-42) at Leyte Gulf in the Philippines to prepare for the invasion of Japan.
At 14 minutes past midnight, on 30 July 1945, midway between Guam and Leyte Gulf, she was hit by two torpedoes out of six fired by the I-58, a Japanese submarine.
A hastily convened closed-door court of inquiry had been convened in Guam on August 13 with the Judge Advocate (prosecutor), Captain William Hilbert, stating that they were "starting the proceedings without having available all the necessary data." Little was done to add to such data prior to the court's decision.

The temporary repairs to the bow of USS San Francisco provide adequate structural integrity and proper buoyancy for transit under her own power to a shipyard, which is yet to be determined, with comprehensive repair capabilities.
The USS San Francisco work must be completed at another shipyard because repair work on submarines requires specialized skills and experience, and the work required on the submarine will be more extensive than the capabilities available at the Guam Shipyard.

USS Guam, the second large cruiser of the 27,500-ton Alaska class, was built at Camden, New Jersey, and was commissioned in September 1944.
Guam provided anti-aircraft protection during a carrier raid on the Japanese home islands in March 1945 and then fired a shore bombardment mission and supported carrier operations during the Okinawa campaign.
After the Japanese surrender Guam showed the flag off the major ports in the Yellow Sea and at Jinsen (Inchon), Korea, before returning to the United States in December 1945.
