Gurnard had an overall length of 311 feet, an extreme beam of 27 feet, a standard displacement of 1,526 tons, a mean draft of 15 feet, a submerged displacement of 2,424 tons, a designed surface speed of 20.25 knots, a submerged speed of 8.75knots and a designed compliment crew of 6 officers and 54 crewmen.
GURNARD was prepared for sea and her first war patrol commencing November 28,1942, and scheduled for the Bay of Biscay.
GURNARD, as one of the escorting destroyers headed for her, went to deep submergence and rigged for the expected depth charge attack and during the charging that followed breaking up noises were heard indicating that the GURNARDS' torpedoes had found their targets.

USS Gurnard (SS-254), a Gato -class submarine, was the first ship of the United States Navy to be named for the gurnard, a trigloid fish having three free pectoral rays, a food fish of the genus Trigla.
Gurnard finished her last patrol at Pearl Harbor 9 May and put in at Mare Island, Calif., 9 days later for a major overhaul.
Gurnard remained in reserve until 1 July 1949 when she reported to the San Francisco Naval Shipyard for activation as an armory for naval reserve submarine training.

USS Gurnard (SSN-662), a Sturgeon -class submarine, was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for the gurnard, a trigloid fish having three pectoral rays, a food fish of the genus Trigla.
The contract to build her was awarded to Mare Island Naval Shipyard on 24 October 1963 and her keel was laid down on 22 December 1964.
Gurnard was decommissioned on 28 April 1995 and stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on 28 April 1995.

 Rescue From The Heart Of A Typhoon
On the morning of July 8, the nuclear fast-attack submarine USS BARB SSN-596 was in Guam's Apra Harbor completing repairs on a hydraulic pump prior to a six or seven-week Marianas patrol.
Upon approaching Guam, GURNARD was diverted to conduct a search and rescue mission to recover a downed B-52 bomber crew.
Arriving at the scene in the midst of Typhoon Rita, GURNARD and BARB (a 594 class nuclear submarine) heroically pulled five of the ill-fated crew members from the rolling seas.

Once, in January of 1971, we were assigned during local ops in San Diego to act as an enemy submarine to the USS Gurnard (SSN-662) while she was doing her workup to deploy to WestPac.
Gurnard did not have our op-plan, but she was to try to track us, fire simulated torpedoes, and then open out and regenerate the problem until the end of the exercise.
One night after Gurnard returned to port, one of the Menhaden crew (SK2 Steve Rose) put on a wetsuit and quietly swam over to where Gurnard was moored (alongside the Nereus), pushing a cardboard box containing a can of white paint and a paint brush.

The Gurnard ’s second war patrol commenced out of Pearl Harbor in late spring 1943, and within days she damaged two Japanese merchant vessels and survived a 29 June depth charge attack.
The Gurnard’; s sixth, seventh, eight, and ninth war patrols were successful as well.
She subsequently performed reconnaissance of enemy units and patrolled with several other U.S. submarines during the spring of 1945.

Following a third deployment to the Western Pacific onboard USS GURNARD (SSN 662), he reported to the staff of Commander Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet where he served as Assistant Material Officer for Attack Submarines.
In January 1980 he relieved as Executive Officer on USS JOHN MARSHALL (SSBN 611) and completed the ship's first deployment as an attack submarine to the Mediterranean Sea.
Captain Camp commanded the USS SARGO (SSN 583) from 1985 until she was decommissioned in 1988.

ELLIOT was tasked to conduct an encounter exercise again USS GURNARD utilizing the AN/SQR-19 towed array and our embarked SH-60B LAMPS MK III Det while enroute San Diego.
After a successful maintenance period, ELLIOT departed San Francisco enroute Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station to conduct the offload of all missiles and ammunition in preparation for the upcoming DSRA yard period.
ELLIOT was then assigned an availability with the USS SAMUEL GOMPERS in Alameda, CA where she spent two weeks moored, receiving much needed services.

With dawn coming and the possibility of the fog lifting, the Gurnard retired from the battle.
The new Mk18 electric torpedoes performed excellant, but their small warheads and slow speed limit their ablity to be very effective in sinking enemy (war) ships.
