Hackleback (SS-295) was launched 30 May 1943 by the Cramp Shipbuilding Co., Philadelphia, Pa.; sponsored by Mrs.
Hackleback three times came to within 13,000 yards of the Yamato force, but destroyers forced her out of range before she could get in position to fire torpedoes.
During the rest of her first patrol, Hackleback made two gun attacks on small ships, but discontinued the engagements when it appeared they were trying to lure her in close to shore.

USS Silversides (SS/AGSS-236), a Gato-class submarine, was the first ship of the United States Navy to be named for the silversides, a small fish marked with a silvery stripe along each side of its body.
Her keel was laid down on 4 November 1940 by the Mare Island Navy Yard in Vallejo, California.
During her thirteenth war patrol, Silversides was a member of a coordinated attack group with submarines Hackleback (SS-295) and Threadfin (SS-410), patrolling off Kyushu.

USS Trigger (SS-237), a Gato-class submarine, was the first ship of the United States Navy to be named for named for the triggerfish, any of numerous deep-bodied fishes of warm seas having an anterior dorsal fin with two or three stout erectile spines.
Her keel was laid down on 1 February 1941 at Mare Island, California, by the Mare Island Navy Yard.
Threadfin was the only one of these submarines that had been attacked that day, and she reported that she heard many depth charges and several heavy explosions east of her position after the attack on her ceased.

USS Threadfin (SS-410), originally named USS Sole (SS-410), was laid down on 18 March 1944 at the Portsmouth Navy Yard in Kittery, Maine.
On 30 January 1945, USS Threadfin sighted a large enemy patrol craft, but prudently allowed her to pass, unmolested, in the hope of drawing a bead on any merchant vessels for which she might be running interference.
USS Threadfin was the lead ship in a Sixth Fleet Naval Review to honor the visit and inspection of the naval units by the President of the United States...Richard Nixon...who watched the demonstrations from the flight deck of an aircraft carrier.

On 31 March, that group was dissolved, and Threadfin received orders to join Hackleback (SS-295) and Silversides (SS-236) near Bungo Suido, the primary entrance to the Seto Inland Sea which separates Honshu from Kyushu and Shikoku.
The new attack group's primary assignment was to guard against an undetected sortie of the remainder of Japan's fleet during the Allied assault on Okinawa.

Departing Guam on 11 Mar 1945, USS Trigger I (SS-237), under the command of CDR D. Connole, headed for the Nansei Shoto area to conduct her twelfth war patrol during WWII.
On 25 March she was to move west and patrol between 29!N and 31!N west of the Nansei Shoto chain, remaining clear of restricted areas and outside the 100 fathom curve.
Since she knew the position of the enemy restricted area containing mines, and had been told to keep clear of it, it is extremely doubtful that Trigger's loss was due to a mine.

They based their plans on the dry-dock overhaul of Cobia (SS-245), a memorial in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, which cost US$500,000 in 1996.
