USS Haddock (SS-231), a Gato-class submarine, was the second submarine of the United States Navy to be named for the haddock, a small edible Atlantic fish, related to the cod.
Haddock damaged another ship 13 November, only to be prevented from finishing her off by escort craft, and expended her last torpedo on an empty tanker 16 November.
Haddock departed Midway 11 March for her fourth war patrol, and saw her first action 3 April off Palau, when she encountered a transport protected by a corvette.

USS Tullibee (SS-284), a Gato-class submarine, was the first ship of the United States Navy to be named for the tullibee, a whitefish of central and northern North America.
Her keel was laid down on 1 April 1942 at Mare Island, California, by the Mare Island Navy Yard.
On 19 January, Haddock reported that she had damaged the Japanese escort carrier Unyo which limped to Saipan.

USS Sennet (SS-408), a Balao-class submarine, was a ship of the United States Navy to be named for the sennet, a barracuda.
On 13 February, two 300-ton picket boats were sunk by the combined gunfire of Sennet, Haddock (SS-231), and Lagarto (SS-371).
Three days later, the submarine attacked an enemy minelayer with an offset spread of torpedoes from her stern tubes and went deep, to 200 feet (60 m).

USS Lagarto (SS-371), a Balao-class submarine, was the only ship of the United States Navy to be named for the lagarto, a lizard fish.
Her keel was laid down on 12 January 1944 by the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company of Manitowoc, Wisconsin.
In a coordinated attack 13 February with submarines Haddock (SS-231) and Sennet (SS-408), she engaged four heavily-armed picket boats in a gun battle, sank two, and damaged the others.

Under the Navy's relentless attack, spearheaded by the submarine, Japan's sea lifelines had shrunk to a trickle and targets were scarce-but she succeeded in sinking a small escort vessel 24 April, before returning to Pearl Harbor 10 May 1944.
So HADDOCK departed for the United States 7 September and after transiting the Panama Canal and visiting various ports on the East Coast, arrived at New London, Conn., 29 March 1946.

July 2, 2005: The submarine USS Lagarto has reportedly been located in the Gulf of Thailand.
The Lagarto, (SS-371) has been missing since May 4, 1945 when she and the USS Baya (SS-318) were attempting to sink a Japanese tanker which they had spotted on the 2nd.
The tanker, traveling under what is described as "heavy escort" was attacked by the Baya on the evening of the 2nd and again after midnight on the night of the 3-4 Both attacks were driven off by the escorting ships.

The sub was transported down the he Mississippi River in a floating dry dock, and then cleared the Panama Canal and set course for Pearl Harbor on December 25, 1944.
On January 24th, Lagarto and Haddock (SS-231), proceeded to Saipan, arriving on February 4th and mooring at Tanapag Harbor.
She sank the Japanese submarine RO-49 on February 24, 1945, and participated in several surface gun attacks with Haddock (SS-231) and Sennet (SS-408).

On April 30, 1942 the USS PETO was the first of 10 Gato and 18 Balao Class Submarines built by the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company and launched sideways into the Manitowoc River.
LAGARTO contacted USS BAYA (SS-318), already patrolling in Siam Gulf on 2 May 1945, and exchanged calls with her by SJ radar.
She sank the Japanese submarine I-371 on 24 February 1945, and participated in several surface gun attacks with USS HADDOCK II (SS-231) and USS SENNET (SS-408).

Every patrol made by this officer was designated as successful for the award of combat insignia, a record surpassed by no commanding officer in the Submarine Force.
