USS Hake (SS/AGSS-256), a Gato-class submarine, was a ship of the United States Navy named for the hake, a North American game fish.
Hake (SS-256) was launched by the Electric Boat Co., Groton, Conn., 17 July 1942; sponsored by Mrs.
Hake acted as lifeguard ship for the air strikes against Japan, and after the surrender had the distinction of being 1 of 12 submarines to witness the historic ceremonies on board the battleship Missouri in Tokyo Bay.

On 8 November 1944 a wolfpack, headed by USS Growler, closed a Japanese convoy for attack, with Growler on the opposite side of the enemy from USS Hake (SS 256) and USS Hardhead (SS 365).
After the attack was underway, Hake and Hardhead what sounded like a torpedo explosion and then a series of depth charges on Growler\'s side of the convoy, and then nothing.
USS Growler is damaged by accidental ramming of the Japanese storeship Hayasaki and gunfire from the same vessel some 70 miles northwest of Rabaul in position 03.34S, 151.09E.
