PEARL HARBOR -- The Secretary of the Navy, the Honorable Richard Danzig and The Honorable Daniel Akaka, a U.S. Senator from Hawaii, unveiled the image of the third Virginia-Class submarine USS Hawaii (SSN 776).
USS Hawaii, which will be 377 feet in length and displace over 7,800 tons when submerged, will have a crew of 134 men.
USS Hawaii is projected to be commissioned in January 2007.

USS Hawaii, the third 27,500-ton Alaska class large cruiser, was one of a group of big-gun combatants (including the five Montana-class battleships and three more Alaskas) whose construction was suspended in May 1942 before work began so that materials and facilities could be used to build more urgently needed ships such as ASW escorts.
Hawaii was reinstated in the building program in June 1943 and her keel was laid the following December, almost two years after her sister Guam.
Hawaii's three 12-inch gun turrets were removed when the ship was moved to the Philadelphia Reserve Fleet.
