Seven survivors of the USS Houston, joined by approximately 200 friends and family, gathered in downtown Houston on Saturday, March 3, 2007, to remember the sacrifices of the men from the USS Houston.
Wreaths were laid at the foot of the marble monument, in tribute to the men of all nations who fought in the Dutch East Indies in 1942.
It was gratifying to appear at such a well attended venue, and before such a robust gathering of USS Houston family and friends.

The second Houston (CA 30) was launched by Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co., Newport News, Va., 7 September 1929, sponsored by Miss Elizabeth Holcombe, daughter of the mayor of Houston, Tex.; and commissioned as CL 30 17 June 1930, Captain J. Gay commanding.
Houston took one hit, disabling her No. 3 turret, and cruiser Marblehead was so damaged that she had to be sent out of the battle area.
Houston's fate was not known by the world for almost 9 months, and the full story of her courageous fight was not fully told until after the war was over and her survivors were liberated from prison camps.

USS Houston, a 10,000-ton Cleveland class light cruiser, was built at Newport News, Virginia.
She was commissioned in December 1943, shook down in the Caribbean and arrived in the Pacific war zone at the end of May 1944, in time to participate in the Marianas campaign that began in mid-June with the invasion of Saipan.
During this operation Houston was part of the aircraft carrier forces that struck Japanese targets ashore and defeated the enemy's fleet in the Battle of the Philippine Sea.

Assigned as flagship Hawaiian Detachment, the cruiser arrived Pearl Harbor after her post-overhaul shakedown 7 December 1939, and continued in that capacity until returning to Mare Island 17 February 1940.

USS Houston Association members purchased a new plaque, with correct information about the gun, that will be mounted on the gun barrel’s base Tuesday.
Isom is grateful that the VFW post has taken care of the gun barrel and that its members have invited the USS Houston Association to rededicate the plaque on Veterans Day.

He supported the USS Houston (CA-30) during her years of service as a member of the Cruiser Houston Committee, and following the ship's sinking, continued to memorialize the ship and interact with surviving crew members.
In 1927 he was appointed to the Cruiser Houston Committee, which coordinated the drive towards obtaining a cruiser named "Houston." Thousands of letters and telegrams were sent to Washington as part of the crusade, which was successful.
Most of the correspondence in those files discusses the USS Houston and related matters, although there is one letter, dated August 23, 1977 which includes Bernrieder's recollections of the Camp Logan riots in Houston in 1917.
