USS Idaho (BB-42), a New Mexico-class battleship[?], was the fourth ship of the United States Navy to be named for the 43rd state.
Idaho returned to the New Hebrides on 25 March, and after a short stay in Australia arrived Kwajalein with a group of escort carriers on 8 June.
Idaho made her triumphal entry into Tokyo Bay[?] with occupation troops on 27 August, and witnessed the signing of the surrender on board Missouri on 2 September.

On 8 June 1944, Idaho arrived at Kwajalein with several escort carriers to sail to the Marianas Islands.
Idaho underwent repairs in a floating drydock at Espirtu Strait on 15 August 1944 and then supported the landings in the Palau Islands between 12 through 24 September.
During the operation, waves of kamikazes attacked the fleet and Idaho was successful in shooting down five aircraft but in the process sustained damage on her port side from a near miss.

Four ships of the United States Navy have been named USS Idaho in honor of the 43rd state.
The second USS Idaho (BB-24), a Mississippi-class battleship, missed sailing with the Great White Fleet, saw little action during World War I, was sold to Greece and sunk early in World War II.
The third USS Idaho (SP-545), a motor boat, was chartered for harbor entrance patrol and submarine net patrol in the Cape May and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, areas during World War I.

USS Idaho, a 32,000-ton New Mexico class battleship, was built at Camden, New Jersey.
Idaho next joined the drive across the Central Pacific, taking part in the Makin landing in November 1943, the Kwajalain invasion in February 1944, a bombardment of New Ireland in March, the Marianas operation in June and July, and the assault on the Palaus in September.
Generally inactive from then on, USS Idaho was decommissioned in July 1946 and sold to a scrapper in November 1947.

In 1920, the battleship carried Secretary Daniels and the Secretary of the Interior on an inspection tour of Alaska.
On the return voyage Idaho embarked gallant Cmdr. John Rodgers and his seaplane crew after their attempt to fly to Hawaii, arriving San Francisco 24 September 1925.
Idaho and sister ship USS Mississippi (BB 41) departed Iceland 2 days after Pearl Harbor to join the Pacific Fleet, and arrived San Francisco via Norfolk and the Panama Canal 31 January 1942.

Idaho sailed 29 October for exercises in British and French waters, and upon her return participated in gunnery exercises in Chesapeake Bay 19 to 23 March 1911.
She then steamed to the east coast of Florida for battleship maneuvers, and continued to operate off the coast and in the Caribbean until entering the reserve at Philadelphia 27 October 1913.

In December 1939 he joined the USS JOHN D. FORD (DD-228), and was serving as Gunnery Officer of that destroyer at the outbreak of World War II in December 1941.
He assisted in fitting out the USS PRESTON (DD-795), and served as her Executive Officer from her commissioning in March 1944 until October of that year with the latter months of that period participating in Pacific Operations.

After reporting to CINCPAC (Commander-In-Chief, Pacific) Headquarters at Guam for further orders and told to join the battleship USS Idaho (BB-42) at Leyte Gulf in the Philippines, the USS Indianapolis (CA-35) was sunk in route by two torpedo hits delivered by a Japanese submarine at 14 minutes past midnight, on July 30, 1945.
After almost five days subjected to constant shark attacks, starvation, terrible thirst, exposure and the pain from their wounds, of the 900 who made it into the water only 317 were rescued alive.

USS New Mexico, lead ship of a class of three 32,000-ton battleships, was built at the New York Navy Yard.
Commissioned in May 1918, she spent the rest of the First World War operating near the United States, but steamed to Europe early in 1919 to escort President Wilson home from the Versailles peace conference.
She was sold for scrapping in October 1947.

He was the founder and Chairman of the American Battleship Association, Chairman of the USS Idaho Association and an Honorary member of the USS Missouri Association.
A memorial service and plaque dedication will be held in Fredericksburg, Texas (Nimitz Museum) in March 2006 in conjunction with the ABA Reunion to be held in San Antonio, TX....

Sold 25 November 1947 to be broken up for scrap.
