Independence was decommissioned in ceremonies at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington, on 30 September 1998.

Independence sailed 19 April 1962 for 6th Fleet Duty in support of President Kennedy's firm stand on Berlin during a reoccurrence of stress in a critical area.
Independence departed Norfolk 6 August 1963 to take part in combined readiness exercises in the Bay of Biscay with sea-air units of the United Kingdom and France then entered the Mediterranean 21 August for further duty with the 6th Fleet.
Independence returned to her homeport, Norfolk, Va. in December, arriving the 31st.

On January 21, 1998, the Secretary of Defense, William Cohen spoke to the crew of USS INDEPENDENCE aboard the flight deck officially announcing the Independence's deployment to the Arabian Gulf.
Cohen said INDEPENDENCE would relieve the USS NIMITZ (CVN 68) to keep the presence of America in the Gulf as a reminder to Saddam Hussein that he needs to comply with the United Nations resolutions.

She participated in the Palaus operation in September 1944, air strikes in the Philippines and Okinawa and the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October, and further offensive operations in the Western Pacific during November-December 1944 and January 1945.
USS Independence was sunk as a target off the California coast in January 1951.

Commanded (we believe) by the famous captain Thomas Truxton, it was lost in Ocracoke Creek Inlet in North Carolina in 1778.
This USS Independence was the first of a long line of illustrious Navy ships to bear this famous name, the current one of which is the USS Independence (CVA-62), an aircraft carrier (just recently decommisioned).
