 USS Intrepid (CV-11)
Intrepid participated in the Pacific War, most notably the Battle of Leyte Gulf, recovered space capsules of the Mercury and Gemini projects, served in the Vietnam War, and as of 2004 is a museum ship in New York City.
Intrepid's planes struck Japanese position in the Palaus 6 and 7 September concentrating on airfields and artillery emplacements on Peleliu.
She departed Norfolk 11 June 1964 carrying midshipmen to the Mediterranean for a hunter-killer at sea training with the 6th Fleet.

USS Intrepid was stricken from the Naval Vessel Register in February 1982 and transferred to a New York City organization for further service as a museum, a role she plays to the present day.
USS Intrepid, a 27,100 ton Essex class aircraft carrier built at Newport News, Virginia, was commissioned in August 1943.
Intrepid returned to the western Pacific in time for attacks on the Japanese home islands in mid-March 1945, during which she was lightly damaged by a "Kamikaze".

The eighth USS Hornet (CV/CVA/CVS-12) was originally named USS Kearsarge, but renamed in honor of the CV-8, which was lost in October of 1942.
On 11 September 1953 she was recommissioned as an attack carrier.

Intrepid herself was hit by kamikazes on three occasions, two of which resulted in severe damage and her retirement from action for extensive repairs.
Intrepid did not contribute to the next strikes but in the final attack her a/c together with those of Cabot, Enterpirse, Essex and Franklin achieved several torpedo and bomb hits on Musashi which subsequently sank.
Intrepid's air complement was 36-F6F fighters, 36-SBD dive bombers and 18-TBF/TBM torpedo bombers.

The Intrepid was extensively modernized at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in 1954 to convert her to a modern attack carrier capable of handling jets, and recommissioned in reserve 18 June 1954 as CVA-11.
The USS Intrepid is an Essex class aircraft carrier launched 26 April 1943 by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, Newport News, Virginia.
On 20 October 1944, the Intrepid took place in the largest naval battle in history (the battle of Leyte Gulf) as her planes flew missions in support of the landings of Leyte, the Philippines.

INTREPID began her third combat operation on 6 September 1944, CVG-18 its first.
That night torpedo planes attacked the task force, one of them scoring on USS INTREPID; a "tin fish" exploded portside at the waterline, tearing a huge gash in her hull and killing five enlisted men (six others were missing).
INTREPID retired from her second combat operation a cripple, it being necessary for the ship to steer by her engines since the rudder was jammed hard to port.

Intrepid is tied up at Pier 86 in the Hudson River on the west side of Manhattan Island.
When the Intrepid was brought in, it was grounded, and water has entered some of the lowest levels of the ships, so it is unlikely that the below the hangar deck areas will ever be available for tours.
While the US Navy planned to scrap the Intrepid, a group of New Yorkers campaigned and raised money to save the ship, which is now billed as the largest sea, air, and space museum in the world.

It is possible that the continuing use of the Intrepid as a command post (I visited eight months after 9-11) had something to do with this, but the hangar deck made a most impressive museum, including a very moving memorial to 9-11 forward on the starboard side.
The Intrepid is more of a museum than a museum ship; none of her compartments below the hangar deck were open that day.
As such it was not a pleasant day to walk the decks of this Essex class carrier, but the Intrepid has a huge inventory of aircraft, and most of them are on the flight deck.
