The third Iowa (BB-61) was commissioned 22 February 1943.
In January 1944, Iowa entered the Pacific Theatre and her combat debut in the Marshalls.
Iowa joined UN Forces in the Korean conflict from April - October 1952, bombarding enemy targets at Songjin, Hungnam, and Kojo, North Korea.

The second Iowa (BB-4) was laid down by William Cramp and Sons, Philadelphia, 5 August 1893, Iaunched 28 March 1896; sponsored by Miss M. Drake, daughter of the governor of Iowa; and commissioned 16 June 1897, Captain W. Sampson in command.
Iowa continuing the battle in company with converted yacht Oloucester, sank the Spanish destroyer Pluton and so damaged destroyer Furor that she ran upon the rocks.
Iowa remained in the North Atlantic until she was placed in reserve 6 July 1907.

The first two Iowa Class battleships (BB-61USS Iowa and BB-62 USS New Jersey) were completed early in 1943, and served for the remainder of WWII in the Pacific where they screened fast carrier task forces against air and surface threats, did occasional shore bombardment and provided flagships for tactical commanders.
The second pair (BB-63 USS Missouri and BB-64 USS Wisconsin), whose construction had been somewhat delayed, came to the Pacific during the war's last year.
USS New Jersey was briefly re-activated again for bombardment duty during the Vietnam War and then placed back into reserve.

 USN Ship Types--South Dakota class (BB-49 through BB-54)
On display in East Willard Park, Washington Navy Yard, D.C., in October 1972.
This gun is Number 111, built at the Washington Navy Yard in 1922 for planned installation on the abortive South Dakota (BB 49-54) class battleships and Lexington (CC 1-6) class battle cruisers.
The two sixteen-inch projectiles displayed alongside the gun are inert shells fired by USS New Jersey into San Clemente Island, California, during shore bombardment practice in 1968.

The rumblings about reactivating the Iowa class battleships (which will never happen) has reminded me about the turret explosion that occurred on the Iowa.
At one stage it was also believed that the event occurred due to sabotage.
I saw her down in Newport RI where she was tied up at Pier 1 for a few years before being taken out to become a museum.

Probably the finest battleships of all time, the four Iowa Class battleships (BB-61 to BB-64) served in WWII - a conflict that ended with the Japanese surrender taking place aboard USS Missouri while anchored in Tokyo Bay on September 2nd, 1945.
After WWII, three of the four Iowa Class battleships were mothballed.
At present, all four battleships are either serving as museums or soon will be.

We played a concert aboard the USS Hornet, now a museum in Alameda, as is the Salem in Quincy, Mass.
The USS Newport News made it possible for me to see my father's family for the first time when we docked in Naples, Italy.
Dan is a plank owner of the USS Newport News and he recognized a few of the other sailors names.
