  USS Jack (SSN-605) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
USS Jack (SSN-605), a Permit-class submarine, was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for the jack, any young pike, green pike or pickerel, or large California rockfish.
Jack was a variation on the Permit class, twenty feet longer than her sisters and using an experimental direct-drive plant with counter-rotating propellers on a single shaft.
Jack was decommissioned and stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on 11 July 1990.

Jack came upon a five-ship convoy 26 June and in a series of five well-executed attacks sank 4,000-ton passenger-cargo ship Toyo Maru and 6,000-ton cargo ship Shozan Maru.
Jack steamed out of Fremantle for her fifth war patrol 4 June 1944, again returning to Japan's important lifelines in the South China Sea.
Jack sailed for the United States 5 September 1945, steaming via Pearl Harbor and the Canal Zone to New York 3 October 1945.

Jack was born on a cotton farm in southeast Ellis County in northeast Texas on October 22, 1915.
Jack called Skipper at her office to say "goodby for a while," and telephoned his mother and sisters, Thelma and Sue, to say he was shipping out.
Jack disembarked with Company F on August 19 at Hilo docks, and may have boarded the narrow gauge, island railroad for the 65-mile trip to Camp Tarawa, which would be home for the 5th Marine Division for the next four and one-half months.

USS Oliver Hazard Perry (FFG-7), lead ship of the Oliver Hazard Perry class of guided-missile frigates, was named for the American naval hero who was victorious at the 1813 Battle of Lake Erie.
USS Gary (FFG-51), an Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate, is a ship of the United States Navy, named for Commander Donald A. Gary (1903–1977), who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism during the fires on USS Franklin (CV-13) on 19 March 1945.

All of these submarines were built and served in the Second World War except USS Francis Scott Key...which was a fleet ballistic missile submarine - nuclear powered - which first went to sea in 1966 - with me aboard.
Subsequently, I served in USS Sea Leopard (SS 483) and USS Burrfish (SSR 312) in SubRon Six in Norfolk.
In 1957, I was assigned to USS Guavina (AOSS 362)...also at the northernmost city in Cuba.
