USS Canopus was long gone and her jetty had been swallowed by the massive pier complex.
USS James Monroe (SSBN-622) followed and became the base's first SSBN to conduct a refit and mount a deterrent patrol.
The base was slated to receive half of the oncoming Ohio Class SSBN's and to prepare the base for the support of the new boats and their larger missiles, it was decided to convert Subron 16's boats to the Trident 1 C4 missile.

The USS James Monroe (SSBN-622) on 9 January 1968 became the first submarine with POLARIS A2's to enter overhaul and to receive POLARIS A3 capability.
The first SSBN to undergo ERP was the USS James Madison (SSBN-627); the ERP was conducted at the Holy Loch, Scotland, tender refit site in September- November 1974.
USS Sam Rayburn (SSBN-635) was selected to fulfill this requirement and was deactivated on 16 September 1985, with missile tubes filled with concrete and tube hatches removed.

The Lafayette class of submarine was an evolutionary development from the Ethan Allen class of fleet ballistic missile submarine, slightly larger and generally improved.

Following a tour of Operations Officer in USS HARDER (SS 568), he entered nuclear power training and attended Nuclear Power School in Bainbridge, Maryland, and the S1C Prototype in Windsor, Connecticut.
He then reported to USS JAMES MONROE (SSBN 622) in July 1967, serving as Main Propulsion Assistant during a regular overhaul and refueling.
He was detached from USS HADDOCK in August 1971 and attended the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia.
