USS John C. Calhoun (SSBN-630), a James Madison-class ballistic missile submarine, was the only ship of the United States Navy to be named for the distinguished legislator.
She was launched on 22 June 1963 sponsored by Miss Rosalie J. Calhoun, and commissioned on 15 September 1964, with Commander Deane L. Axene in command of the Blue Crew and Commander Frank A. Thurtell in command of the Gold Crew.
John C. Calhoun was decommissioned on 28 March 1994 and stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on 28 March 1994.

John C. Butler was laid down by Consolidated Steel Corp., Ltd., Orange, Texas, 5 October 1943; launched 12 November 1943; sponsored by Mrs.
John C. Butler received five battle stars for World War II service, and was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for her part in the Battle off Samar.

The JOHN C. CALHOUN was built to accommodate the Polaris A3 missiles and was refitted with the Poseidon missiles from 1969 on.
John Caldwell Calhoun was born 18 March 1782 in Abbeville District, S.C., educated at Yale, and admitted to the South Carolina Bar in 1807.
Calhoun died in Washington 30 March 1850, to stand as America's greatest state's rights theoretician and one of its most distinguished legislators.

The first SSBN to undergo ERP was the USS James Madison (SSBN-627); the ERP was conducted at the Holy Loch, Scotland, tender refit site in September- November 1974.
Five additional SSBNs 629, 630, and 634 underwent a "pierside backfit" while three other SSBNs (627, 632, and 633) were backfitted during their normally-scheduled second shipyard overhauls.
USS Sam Rayburn (SSBN-635) was selected to fulfill this requirement and was deactivated on 16 September 1985, with missile tubes filled with concrete and tube hatches removed.

The USS John C. Calhoun Veterans Association is a fraternal organization for United States Navy Submariners who served aboard the nuclear powered fleet ballistic missile submarine USS John C. Calhoun (SSBN-630).
The primary purpose of the association is to provide an opportunity for the members to enjoy camaraderie with former shipmates and other submariners with a common background of service aboard the Calhoun, and to provide the opportunity for members to actively participate in reunions and other activities of the association.
This is handy for reading scrolling text or taking a closer look at a photo.
