Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr.: The namesake of DD-850, Lt. Kennedy was the older brother of President John F. Kennedy, and Senators Robert and Edward Kennedy.
In Spring 2000, Kennedy was towed to Rhode Island sound to portray herself and her sister ship John R. Pierce (DD753) in the Kevin Costner film entitled Thirteen Days, which recreated the events surrounding the Cuban Missile Crisis.
In October Kennedy was dispatched to the Caribbean to participate in the naval blockade of Cuba.

Kennedy never married but romantically was linked to at least two women: Edith Bouvier Beale, the beautiful cousin of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and Katharine Mortimer, a New York socialite who declined to become more seriously involved with Joe Jr.
Kennedy's body was never recovered, and he was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross.

The Joseph P Kennedy, Jr is a Gearing-class destroyer.
It was a little hard to make comparisons, though, because the Kennedy has had some of her turrets removed in various modernization refits.
The LCM was slippery, but didn't prepare me for the Kennedy's decks - it was something of a miracle that I didn't crash on the upper deck by the ASROC launcher.
