The USS Macedonian was a United States Navy 38-gun sailing frigate, originally the HMS Macedonian of the Royal Navy, captured by Stephen Decatur in the War of 1812.
On 20 May 1815 she departed for the Mediterranean to join Commodore Decatur's 10-ship squadron in the Algerian War, a renewal of naval action against the Barbary[?] powers, to stop harassment of American shipping.
Then, from 1857 to 1861 she served with the Home Squadron[?] in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean.

USS Kearsarge, a 1550-ton Mohican class steam sloop of war, was built at the Portsmouth Navy Yard, Kittery, Maine, under the 1861 Civil War emergency shipbuilding program.
In June 1864, while under the command of Captain John Winslow, Kearsarge found CSS Alabama at Cherbourg, France, where she had gone for repairs after a devastating cruise at the expense of the United States' merchant marine.
Florida, Kearsarge went to the Caribbean, then to Boston, where she received repairs before returning to Europe in April 1865 to try to intercept the ironclad CSS Stonewall.

USS Release was a bark-rigged sailing vessel in the United States Navy during the American Civil War.
Later in 1859 she served as supply ship for the Paraguay expedition sent to Asunción to demand indemnity and apology from the Paraguayan Government for the firing on Water Witch in 1858.
She was sent to Gibraltar 30 September 1862 to meet Kearsarge and then directed to Algeciras, Morocco to watch the Confederate raider Sumter.

During the course of these refits her forecastle deck was extended aft of the foremast, a quarterdeck was constructed, a conning platform was added forward of the funnel, her bulkheads were raised and her sheer markedly flattened.
The Revell Kearsarge was truly one of the most carefully researched styrene models of its day and with her quarterdeck and conning platform restored could easily serve as the basis for an extremely accurate model of this famous warship at the end of her career.

In April of 1861 Semmes was accepted into the Confederate navy as a commander and was sent to New Orleans, Louisiana, ordered to convert a steamer into the cruiser/commerce raider CSS Sumter.
In June 1861 Semmes ran the Federal blockade in the Sumter and commenced a career as one of the greatest commerce raiders in naval history.
The Alabama returned to the Atlantic and made port in Cherbourg, France, where she was blockaded by the USS Kearsarge.
