USS Kentucky (BB-66) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The keel of Kentucky (BB-66), an Iowa-class battleship, was laid at Norfolk Navy Yard, Portsmouth, Virginia, on 6 December 1944, but construction was suspended on 17 February 1947 when the battleship was 72.1 percent complete.
In May or June 1956, Kentucky's bow was removed and transported on a large crane barge from Newport News, Virginia, where she had been towed, back to Norfolk Naval Shipyard, to be used in the repair of USS Wisconsin (BB-64), which had been damaged in a collision with USS Eaton (DDE-510) on 6 May 1956.
Kentucky was struck from the Naval Vessel Register on 9 June 1958 and her incomplete hulk was sold for scrapping to Boston Metals Company of Baltimore, Maryland, on 31 October.

Kentucky - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kentucky can be divided into five primary regions: the Cumberland Mountains and Cumberland Plateau in the southeast, the north-central Bluegrass region, the south-central and western Pennyroyal Plateau, also sometimes termed "Pennyrile" with cities such as Elizabethtown and Bowling Green, the western coal-fields area, and the far-west Jackson Purchase.
Kentucky was a battleground during the war; the Battle of Blue Licks, one of the last major battles of the Revolution, was fought in Kentucky.
Kentucky's largest cities and most of the fast growing counties are concentrated in what is referred to as the Golden Triangle, which is almost entirely in the Bluegrass region, with the exception of Hardin, Meade and LaRue counties which are in the Pennyroyal region.

At the moment of collision the USS Kentucky (Ohio class ballistic missile submarine) was at the surface, and the USS San Juan (Los Angeles class attack submarine) was submerged.
Recent incident suggests, that the USS San Juan did not detect the USS Kentucky, in spite of the fact that the latter was sailing surfaced and generating much more noise, compared to those, created by the SSBN moving with the same speed fully submerged.
As an example, the USS Baton Rouge made an attempt to trail a Russian Sierra class (project 945) attack submarine, and this attempt resulted in a collision in February 1992.
