  CSS Palmetto State - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
CSS Palmetto State, an ironclad ram, was built by Cameron and Co., Charleston, South Carolina in January 1862, under the supervision of Flag Officer D.
The attack of the Confederate rams caused the temporary withdrawal of the blockaders from their inshore positions and led to the claim by the Confederate Government, unsuccessfully advanced, that the blockade of Charleston had been raised.
Palmetto State was burned by the Confederates upon the evacuation of Charleston on February 18, 1865.

 USN Ships--USS Keystone State (1861-1865)
USS Keystone State, a 1364-ton side wheel steamship, was built at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1853 as the civilian steamer Keystone State.
Operations with the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron began in January 1862, and Keystone State took part the seizure of positions along the Florida and Georga coasts during March 1862.
Keystone State returned to active duty in October 1863 and served thereafter with the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron, mainly off the North Carolina coast.

On July 05, she sailed to rendezvous with USS HOUSTON (CA-30), on which President Franklin D. Roosevelt was embarked, for a cruise through the Panama Canal and an exercise with airship MACON and her brood of aircraft off of California.
USS LEXINGTON (CV-2) was mortally wounded and NEW ORLEANS stood by, her men diving overboard to rescue survivors and her boat crews closing the burning carrier, oblivious to the dangers of flying debris and exploding ordnance as they saved 580 of LEXINGTON's crew who were then landed at Noumea.
USS NEW ORLEANS (LPD-18) is commanded by CDR John B. Skillman, USN, and is scheduled to commission into the active fleet on March 10, 2007.

 C.S.S. Palmetto State, Ironclad!
The Palmetto State was built as an ironclad ram, similar to the casemate ironclad CSS Richmond.
Leaving the Mercedita the Palmetto State now headed further out to sea chasing two other Federal steamers, who outdistanced her, finally she joined the Chicora who had crippled the USS Keystone State and was in a long range duel with the blockaders Quaker City, Ottowa, Undilla, Augusta, Stettin, Flag, and Memphis.
Along with the Chicora the Palmetto State declined an engagement with the USS Ironsides and 6 monitors on 17 August 1863.

On January 31st, 1863, the Palmetto State and her sister ram, the CSS Chicora (similar in design with the major difference being a four sided casemate versus this eight sided vessel), launched a surprise attack on the blockading Union force, off Charleston.
Since she has such a low silhouette, she was able to keep under the guns of the USS Mercidita, ramming her, firing at her, forcing her to surrender.
Then turning her attention to the USS Keystone State, she launched several shells into her, causing loss of all power, later being towed into safety.

Even as the PALMETTO STATE and CHICORA were returning from their triumphant raid, they were receiving a new addition to their ranks, in the form of a somewhat battered warship that had once been the USS ISAAC SMITH but would soon be the CSS STONO.

Thomas Addison Knowlton, USS Wabash, was born in Rockport, Massachusetts, and died at the age of 102, at Ashland, Massachusetts, on February 14, 1940.

Appointed t to the United states Naval Academy from Maryland, 1856, and graduated in 1860.
Commanded USS Thetis and Greely Expedition, 1884, rescued Lieutenant Greely and 6 survivors at Cape Sabine, for which was awarded gold watch and vote of thanks of the Maryland legislature and a gold medal from Masssachusetts Humane Society.
He maintained a firm but tactful presence in harbor until relieved by USS Yorktown, commanded by Robley D. Evans, in November.

Through a lot of diplomatic maneuvering, she was actually commissioned under the Confederate flag in Jan 65, but did not reach the Confederacy before the end of the war.
Recent dives sponsored by Florida State University suggest she was a sister ship of the CSS Nashville, never completed.

The blockade had been lifted in mid-February by Presidential proclamation (see 18 February 1864), but on 15 August Secretary of State Seward had informed Secretary Welles that it should be re-enforced once more because of the withdrawal of Union troops stationed in the area.
Major General John G. Walker, CSA, reported to the Confederate States War Department that 10 sailors and marines under Captain W. Brown, CSMC, and Lieutenant Marcus J. Beebee, CSN, had disguised themselves as passengers on board steamer Ike Davis and had captured her off Brazos, Texas.
Collins' actions, though cheered in the North where Florida was a household name because of her continued "depredations", were in violation of international law, and prompt disavowal of them was made by Secretary of State Seward.
