  USS Kidd (DD-661) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
USS Kidd (DD-661), a Fletcher-class destroyer, was the 1st ship of the United States Navy to be named for Rear Adm. Isaac C. Kidd, Commander of Battleship Division 1, who died on the bridge of his flagship USS Arizona during the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Kidd dropped astern of her formation to rescue the crew of a plane from aircraft carrier USS Essex(CV-9) which had splashed as the American carrier launched a strike at Rabaul.
Kidd was towed from Philadelphia and arrived in Baton Rouge on 23 May 1982, and opened to the public on 27 August 1983 as part of the Louisiana Veterans Memorial.

USS Kidd has had a lot of water under her keel since 1943 but now the water is a few feet under most of the time.
Kidd is kept in top shape by a crew of hard working and dedicated volunteers, mostly older retired men who spend a few weekends a year volunteering for the Tin Can Sailors Field Days.
One of the tours was to the USS Kidd DD 661 a Fletcher class destroyer and veteran of WW II, Korea and Vietnam as well as the Cold War.

USS Kidd served with distinction during the war and saw action in some of the heaviest battles with the Japanese from 1943 to 1945.

The USS Kidd (DD-661) is a Fletcher-class destroyer built at Federal Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company in Kearny, N.J. She was named after Rear Admiral Isaac Campbell Kidd, Sr., who was killed aboard the USS Arizona during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.
Kidd was commissioned back into service on March 28, 1951, during the Korean War, where she won an additional four battle stars for service.
Kidd is moored in the Mississippi River in Baton Rouge, La., and is the centerpiece of the Louisiana Naval War Memorial.

USS Kidd was the highlight of my visit to the Pelican State (sorry, New Orleans!).
The Kidd is the marquee attraction at the Louisiana Naval War Memorial in Baton Rouge.
Guarded by an A7 Phantom and an eternal flame, names from 1776 to today are engraved in granite walls that evoke memories of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C. The Kidd alternately floats in the Mississippi River and sits in a 'drydock' depending on the season.

During and after the First World War, Kidd was stationed aboard battleship USS New Mexico, and later he had staff and Naval Academy service.  He was executive officer of the battleship USS Utah and commanded the support ship USS Vega until his assignment as Captain of the Port at Chrisobal, Panama Canal Zone from 1927-30.
Captain Kidd next attended the Naval War College and served on the College staff.  He was commanding officer of the battleship USS Arizona from September 1938 until February 1940.  He was promoted to Rear Admiral and assigned as commander Battleship Division One and chief of staff to commander, Battleships, Battle Force.

Edwina Morton Thirsher, daughter of CDR Dudley "Mush" Morton, captain of the sub USS Wahoo SS 238 which was lost in 1943.

Here are some jpegs of a destroyer model I built some time ago which were taken by a friend, Ken Sallman, of the Twin City Aero Historians in Minneapolis.
The vessel is the USS KIDD, DD 661, as she appeared in August 1945.
It's about 75% scratch-built, took 2025 hours over a 4 1/2 year period to build, and has 14,228 pieces in it.
