Like her near sister USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67), Kitty Hawk is a non-nuclear aircraft carrier, and at present one of only two non nuclear carriers still in active service with the Navy, as such, she is a high priority item for the Navy to replace.
Kitty Hawk set sail on her 17th deployment June 24, 1994, with the goal of providing a stabilizing influence operating in the Western Pacific during a time of great tension in the Far East, particularly concerning North Korea.
Kitty Hawk participated in Exercise Foal Eagle in Fall 2000, and deployed again in March 2001 for a Spring underway period with a historic stop.

Kitty Hawk returned to Pearl Harbor 31 July 1942; loaded men, equipment and airplanes of the 2d Echelon of the 23d Marine Air Group; and set course for Port Vila, Efate, New Hebrides, arriving 28 August.
Between 20 February 1943 and 25 June 1944, Kitty Hawk made seven voyages to Hawaii and seven to the Southwest Pacific carrying vital aircraft, fighting men and munitions to be used in pressing forward toward Japan and victory.
Kitty Hawk arrived Bayonne, N.J., 15 December 1945; visited Norfolk: then decommissioned at New York 24 January 1946; and was returned to her owner, Seatrain Lines, Inc., the same day.

Kitty Hawk spent two days at Bangor offloading ammunition and departed on 15 August for the one day trip to the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Wash. During this short inland sea cruise, local dignitaries and their families were invited aboard.
Kitty Hawk's battle group was relieved by the USS Nimitz battle group on 18 March 1993 and headed for home, after having operated in the Indian Ocean and Arabian Gulf and participated in Operations Restore Hope and Southern Watch.
Kitty Hawk, Chancellorsville and Curtis Wilbur were relieved by the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) battle group, and departed the Arabian Gulf on 19 July 1999, having launched more than 5,400 sorties during her three months in the Gulf.

Hawk moved out of drydock on April 28, 1973 and the next day, on her 12th birthday, was named a Multi-Purpose Aircraft Carrier (CV).
Kitty Hawk departed San Diego on March 8, 1976 and on March 12 entered drydock at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Wash, to commence a 100-million dollar complex overhaul scheduled to last 12 and a half months.

One word of caution to all of you former crew members, the KITTY HAWK now flies the "Don't Tread On Me" flag signifying that she is the oldest ship in the fleet - which when you translate that to us former Hawk crewmembers - we are, like her getting old!!
Starboard side aft you can see the missile launch system, and last the hull number on the Island is over the ventilation louvers, which at a later date was moved forward to where it is today.
As KITTY HAWK herself is a "first," the world's first guided missile carrier, all of her first events were of primary importance to the crew.
