 Design
The LST was designed to ground evenly (from bow to stern) on a beach with a slope of about one-foot for every fifty-feet (the design gradient).
The first LSTs were designed with an elevator to carry equipment between the tank deck and the main deck.
The LSTs were actually loaded for ocean passage to as much as 1,600 tons on the tank deck, and 300 tons on the main deck, and resulted in 33.3 tons per inch of immersion.

USS Hartford ran aground on October 25, 2003 according to the New London Day on October 28, 2003.
The fast-attack submarine USS Hartford arrived at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, Va., Dec. 16, 2003 to repair exterior damage caused by an accidental grounding off the coast of Italy in October.

LST’s were designed specifically to land directly on enemy shores with mission-ready tanks, troops and supplies, unloaded through doors and a ramp at the bow of the ship.
Al’s shipmates on the voyage belong to the National USS LST Association and had worked and prepared for their journey for ten years before it became a reality.

One of the largest and most important ships built during those years was the aircraft carrier USS Lexington (CV2), delivered in 1927.
When she took two torpedo hits during the Battle of Coral Sea and was sunk, the yard employees petitioned the Government to name another carrier after her.

Served on repair ship USS Tutuila(ARG-4) at An Thoi, Phu Quoc Island in support of Swift Boat Coastal Patrol Squadron One, later at Naval Support, Na Bhe in support of swift's based there.
I was on the USS Terrell County for a couple weeks back in about May of '69.
