  USS Luce (DD-522) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
USS Luce (DD-522), a Fletcher-class destroyer, was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for Rear Admiral Stephen B. Luce (1827–1917).
She arrived in the operating area 9 January 1945 screening LSTs and transports of TF 78.
Moments later she slid beneath the surface in a violent explosion carrying 126 of her 312 officers and men with her.

 The History of USS Current
The Pawnee assumed the towing of the Houston from the USS Boston.
USS Randolph was repaired and later rejoined the 5th Fleet, participated in the invasion of Okinawa and launched aircraft to assist in the massive fire bombing raids on the Japanese home islands until the Japanese Surrender.
The USS Skipjack was later delivered to the Mare Island Shipyard for study and then sunk as a target off the Southern California coast on August 11, 1948.

The keel of LST 603 was laid in December 1943 by the Chicago Bridge and Iron Works, Seneca, Illinois, and launched on 14 March 1944; her sponsor was Mrs.
Early in June 1945, LST 603 sailed from Oran to Taranto, Italy then Marshall Tito was threatening the newly won European peace.
After a yard overhaul/reactivation period of approximately five months at Camden New Jersey USS COCONINO COUNTY (LST 603) was recommissioned on 8 June 1966 at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

A large hotel was taken over by the Medical Department personnel of the USS SANCTUARY (AH-16) and equipped for the screening of ambulatory patients.  The Medical Department personnel of the USS CONSOLATION established its center for the reception of the more seriously ill in a steamship ticket office adjacent to the pier.
Operating as a "floating hospital" for the Task Unit of the Fifth Fleet, the USS CONSOLATION predominated in medical consultation activities as well as treating emergency cases.  The ship' excellent equipment for diagnosis was put at the disposal of Medical Officers and Pharmacist Mates of other ships.
The year 1947 began with the USS CONSOLATION moored at Pier 8, Tompkinsville, Staten Island, New York with the Medical Staff consisting of Captain J.M. Woodward and LTJG E.G. Edwards.  The average daily patient census was five.  Early in January four more Medical Officers and seven nurses reported aboard.

The USS GAMBIER BAY (CVE-73), a small escort carrier of WWII, was sunk in a dramatic battle by a tremendously powerful Japanese force intent on attacking the under protected landing craft at Leyte Gulf, in the Philippines.
On the USS Wasatch (AGC9), an Amphibious Force Flagship, we were informed that the USS St Lo (CVE63) was hit by a Kamikaze around 11OO hours and sank.
In the years to follow, I was active as a co-founder in organizing the USS Gambier Bay and VC 1O Association, Incorporated in the State of Minnesota in the late sixties or early seventies, and transferred to Ohio around 1986-87.

 USS Oklahoma City
I was assigned to the OK City at the ripe old age of seventeen and, being the youngest member of the duty section, had the distinct honor of dressing in nothing but a homemade diaper and ringing the ships bell at midnight on a very cold New Years eve 1975 in Yokosuka.
Related: when we got underway to leave, the bands were playing flags flying, and the crews of several VN LSTs were on the rail ready to salute as we passed.
In June of 1966, I was transferred to the U.S.S. Frank Knox DDR-742, which was in drydock in Yokosuka, after running aground outside of Hong Kong.

The Satyr was my second tour in Vietnam, and my first was on board the USS Caddo Parish LST 515 from 1968 - 1969.
I was later transfered to the USS Zelima.
