I was a Signalman on LST 26 in the Pacific from July 1944 until the end of the war.

  USS LST-715 USS DeKalb County - WWII   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Following shakedown training and a yard availability, the LST was sent to the Pacific Ocean via the Panama Canal and on 1 January 1945 she was attached to LST Group 61, LST flotilla 21 and anchored in Pearl Harbor.
With the USS LST 42 in tow, she departed from Iwo Jima on 3 March 1945 and arrived at Saipan five days later where she remained until 8 April conducting training operations and making ship-board repairs.
The LST was transferred to the U.S. Army to be used as a cargo carrier on 28 June 1946 and she was stricken from the Naval Registry on 29 September 1947.

The Pawnee assumed the towing of the Houston from the USS Boston.
USS Randolph was repaired and later rejoined the 5th Fleet, participated in the invasion of Okinawa and launched aircraft to assist in the massive fire bombing raids on the Japanese home islands until the Japanese Surrender.
The USS Skipjack was later delivered to the Mare Island Shipyard for study and then sunk as a target off the Southern California coast on August 11, 1948.

Being one of the crew that was to be aboard the LST 325 when she left the port of Mobile, I can understand what those sailors could have felt like on the 5th on June, 1944.
Any member of the USS LST 325 crew who wishes to sail on the Constitution is free (and encouraged) to accept this invitation.

I attended the funeral of President John F. Kennedy while in DC.My last duty was aboard the USS Salish out of Mayport Fla. We were the prime ship that fought the fires aboard the cruise ship Vi king Princess as she burned in the Carribean.
Subsequently, I was assigned to USS Indepen- dence CVA-62 at NOB Norfolk.

Shortly after reporting aboard the USS POLLUX he was promoted to CSK (SKC) because of his former military experience as a Sergeant Major in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves and his longshore experience.
Chuck was a FA on the POLLUX and retired in 1967 as a BTC.
George was a RMC on the AKS-4 and retired in 1968 as a RMCM.

MC GROGAN'S US NAVY SS-199 USS TAUTOG PATCH USS Tautog (SS-199), 1940-1959 USS Tautog, a 1475-ton Tambor class submarine built at Groton, Connecticut, was commissioned in early July 1940.
In 1947 Tautog went to the Great Lakes, where she was employed as a stationary Naval Reserve training submarine at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for nearly twelve years.
USS Tautog was removed from service in September 1959.

 Korean War Educator: Pusan Perimeter: Fight for a Foothold
At 001, 12 July 1950, the USS Mansfield went to General Quarters and made for its station some 3,000 yards from the beach.
Through radio communication from the USS Mansfield and radar facilities aboard, we were kept on course until about 500 yards from the beach.
Their mission was to relieve embattled 24th Infantry Division troops in the vicinity and to secure the Taejon-Yongdong-Taegu highway corridor which led directly south to the airfield in Taegu and beyond to the ports on the Sea of Japan.

My LCVP and another LCVP were helping out in the operation, when we came back from the beach and were looking for Skagit, and we could not find her anywhere.
We pulled up alongside the USS Bayfield APA 33, and an officer told us that we would be coming aboard Bayfield.
I was aboard the USS Montague during part of the evacation, in fact I think we made three loads of refugees from Haiphong up the river to Siagon.

I was on the USS Bayfield APA33 from 1956 until 1958 in the 2nd division and my duties were running and maintaining the LCVP'S. It sure brings back old memories when I see PA33-21 on the boat in the museum.
I was one LST 765 in the south Pacific.
I served with the U.S Navy in the Pacific aboard the USS Yavapai APB 42 (LST 676).

JTF 1 was subdivided into eight task groups, each of which performed some specific function.
Headquarters for JTF 1 was on the USS Mount McKinley (AGC-7) (Joint Task Group Flagship).
It also furnished boats and boat crews to the boat pool, supplied two AKAs and two LSTs for the construction unit, and transported and quartered the press and observers.
