The LST, or Landing Ship Tank, was originally developed in World War II as a way of transporting tanks and trucks from the US to the beaches of Europe.
The LST was designed to run up onto the beach and then pull itself off by winching in an anchor dropped off the stern.
LST's were equipped with two or more LCVP's hung from davits on deck to aid in landing troops.

 U.S.S. SCHENECTADY [LST 1185]
U.S.S. Resultant Fury 05-01 was established as a demonstration of current weapons system capablities and demonstrated technologies against multiple moving maritime surface targets.
The former Navy landing ship (tank) USS Schenectady is seen in the waters of the Pacific Ocean just west of Hawaii Tuesday just prior to her sinking by B-52 bombers, including one that flew directly from Barksdale Air Force Base, in Operation Resultant Fury.
The decommissioned USS Schenectady sunk at 1:45 p.m.

 USS LST Ship Memorial - Progress Report
LST 325 is currently underway and headed north along the East Coast on her way to Alexandria, Va. Please see the Voyage 2005 Information page for the itinerary and other details.
Because there are still a few details to be worked out, the City and the LST’s Board of Directors have agreed to a memorandum of understanding that the LST will not arrive in Evansville prior to September 15th and not later than September 30th.

He is also a member of the volunteer crew of the restored WWII submarine USS COBIA (SS-245) docked at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc, WI.

I reported to the USS Satyr in New Orleans, LA (June 1967) when she was just returning from mothballs.
I was a plank holder for the recommissioning in early spring of 1968.
I was assigned to the USS Satyr in July of 1967 where it was undergoing repairs.

Reported aboard her in August 68 at Ship Repair Facility, Subic Bay P.I. In June 1969 the 603 was transferred to the South Vietnamese Navy and was renamed the VNN Vung Tau (HQ 503).
The 603 crew was then assigned to the U.S.S. Outagamie County (LST-1073).
I then reported to the U.S.S. Satyr (ARL-23) In January,1970 for a one-year tour of duty in the Mekong Delta.

My LCVP and another LCVP were helping out in the operation, when we came back from the beach and were looking for Skagit, and we could not find her anywhere.
I was aboard the USS Montague during part of the evacation, in fact I think we made three loads of refugees from Haiphong up the river to Siagon.
My father, the late Patrick Cole Downey (Roslyn, NY), served as a radioman aboard the USS Ajax during Passage to Freedom and expressed to me on one occasion (years ago) his dismay over how he and his shipmates and other veterans were never properly recognized for their actions.

Nominal annual dues are charged to help with the expense of mailing out a monthly newsletter to all members.

Lunch was served in the wardroom of the USS Massachusetts.
I was somber as I realized that my dad could have been one of the 95 men who lost their lives on board the USS Ommaney Bay.
  He had shore duty until early 1945, when he volunteered to serve aboard the USS Mississippi, BB-41, in the Pacific with the Seventh Fleet.

The Satyr was my second tour in Vietnam, and my first was on board the USS Caddo Parish LST 515 from 1968 - 1969.
I was later transfered to the USS Zelima.
It is not a complete roster, and will be updated as names are made available.
