 DANFS: USS LST-769
USS LST-769 was built by the American bridge company at Ambridge, Pennsylvania, and completed in September, 1944.
It was placed in partial commissioning on September 28, 1944, and upon arrival at New Orleans, Louisiana, on October 9, it was placed in full commissioning with a complement of six officers and 113 enlisted men of the United States Coast Guard.
In later months this unit managed to escape disaster despite the best efforts of beach masters, whose orders would indicate that they considered the maneuvering characteristics of an LST to be similar to those of a "Jeep".

It was there in July '66 that I reported to the USS Stoddard (DD566).
After active duty, I joined the Navy Reserve and was assigned to a submarine support unit, USS Hollister (DD 788), IUWG-1, and COMNAVSURFPAC, before transferring to the Army reserve as a Small Arms repairman, then joined the Air Force Reserve in 1989 as a Combat Arms Instructor.

The Center's mission is to collect, preserve, display and interpret naval collections and to write and publish a variety of histories, reference works, and documentary volumes covering over 200 years of American naval history.
Their objective is to preserve the history of the offshore and riverine small boats that operated during the last 60 years.

When Edisto was decommissioned I reported to the USS Hyades which happened to be in Boston for repairs.
Rich was on board the USS Resoner DE-1063 1970-1974 and I was on the USS Marvin Shields FF-1066 1978-1981.
I had boxes of slides taken in McMurdo and South Pole taken by my CO Lt Colonel WCT Foley during his trip with Edisto to McMurdo Sound.I am in the process of trying to locate them and if am fortunate will be happy to forward for Historic purposes.

In the Pacific, the PCCs were assigned to the Seventh Fleet, "MacArthur's Navy," participating in all island-hopping amphibious landings through Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
During the October 1944 Leyte, central Philippines, landing operations, PCs 623 and 1119, along with five LCI(R)s, distinguished themselves when they rescued approximately 1,200 survivors of USS Gambier Bay (CVE 73), USS Samuel B. Roberts (DE 413), USS Hoel (DD 533) and USS Johnston (DD 557) sunk by Japanese naval forces during the
Operation Olympic, the invasion of the Japanese home island of Kyushu, was the next big invasion planned for execution in March, 1946.

Moored port side to LST 213 with LST 42 moored alongside to starboard.
In coming alongside, the anchor of LST 23 indented this ship's side to a depth of two (2) inches at frame nineteen (19), eighteen (18) inches below main deck over an area of three (3) inches wide by twelve (12) inches long.
