 Coast Guard-manned Naval Vessels in World War II
Thirty-six more LSTs, composing the 29th Flotilla, were commissioned by Coast Guard crews in 1944 and took part in the Iwo Jima and Okinawa, Japan, landings in 1945, while three others completed their training too late for World War II service.
LST participation in an invasion was rarely a simple beaching, landing of equipment and men, and retracting.
One of the Coast Guard-manned DEs, the USS Leopold, was lost, sunk by an acoustic torpedo while it was attacking a submarine 400 miles south of Iceland during the night of March 9, 1944.

 Leonard Wood
The USS Leonard Wood was named for Leonard Wood, who was born on 9 October 1860 at Winchester, New Hampshire.
At 2011 the destroyer USS Hughes (DD-410) alongside to transfer the 150 survivors from the torpedoed vessel.
622 long tons of equipment and supplies were carried for the assault landings.

Nominal annual dues are charged to help with the expense of mailing out a monthly newsletter to all members.

I was not aware of the USS Underhill and its history.
Was actually looking for info on Uss LST 803, the ship my father served on during WWII and your site came up.
I was communications officer on LST 768 and during the engagement, I was at my station on the flying bridge, had radio contact with Underhill and was in a catbird seat to observe the run by Underhill and her destruction and the movements of the convoy and escorts.

I then reported aboard the USS Jack and remained with her until June of 1968 when I reported to the Submarine Base at New London, Conn. for shore duty.
Was then assigned to the USS Odax.Served aboard the Odax until early fall of 1952 and was trasferred to Bethesda Naval Hospital.Had back operation in late November and honorably discharged on March 3, 1953.
Transferred to the USS NIMITZ (CVN-63) for their 9 month-world cruez, two months after cruiz finished I was so missing the sea life that I cross-decked to the USS Eisenhower (CVN-69) for their 6 month deployment to the Med.

The first ship named for a then-living person was USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), named in 1975.
Exceptions: Initial vessel USS Monitor gave her name to the type; Puritan, Dictator, Terror had non-traditional names.
