On the sides of the fl sections all 157 LSTs constructed at Seneca are listed The monument stands in Crotty Park in Seneca, on property adjacent to the old Chicago Bridge and Iron shipyard.
One goal of the LST Association is to reacquire an operational LST from one of the foreign countries, restore it, and put it on display as a memorial to to the sailors who manned these ships and to those who died serving their country on an LST.

 DANFS: USS LST-769
USS LST-769 was built by the American bridge company at Ambridge, Pennsylvania, and completed in September, 1944.
It was placed in partial commissioning on September 28, 1944, and upon arrival at New Orleans, Louisiana, on October 9, it was placed in full commissioning with a complement of six officers and 113 enlisted men of the United States Coast Guard.
In later months this unit managed to escape disaster despite the best efforts of beach masters, whose orders would indicate that they considered the maneuvering characteristics of an LST to be similar to those of a "Jeep".

The USS GAMBIER BAY (CVE-73), a small escort carrier of WWII, was sunk in a dramatic battle by a tremendously powerful Japanese force intent on attacking the under protected landing craft at Leyte Gulf, in the Philippines.
On the USS Wasatch (AGC9), an Amphibious Force Flagship, we were informed that the USS St Lo (CVE63) was hit by a Kamikaze around 11OO hours and sank.
In the years to follow, I was active as a co-founder in organizing the USS Gambier Bay and VC 1O Association, Incorporated in the State of Minnesota in the late sixties or early seventies, and transferred to Ohio around 1986-87.

During the last days of 1944, the USS BUSH was one of several destroyers screening a convoy of landing craft, tenders, and cargo vessels in the Philippine Islands.
LST 751 reported sighting mine to port of center column.

USS Moore (DE 442) and USS Chauncey (DD 667) took the shore batteries under fire and were themselves taken under fire by several rounds that landed close but were harmless.
USS Prichett (DD 561) and USS Shelton (DD 790) operating in Wonsan Harbor, were under shore fire from an estimated 105 mm enemy gun.
USS Los Angeles (CA 135) and USS McDord (DD 534) avoided two rounds of unknown caliber fire; Yo-do Island received 57 rounds of 122 to 155 mm fire; and Tae-do Island received eight rounds of 82 mm mortar fire.

 Too Good to be Forgotten
In the Pacific, the PCCs were assigned to the Seventh Fleet, "MacArthur's Navy," participating in all island-hopping amphibious landings through Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
During the October 1944 Leyte, central Philippines, landing operations, PCs 623 and 1119, along with five LCI(R)s, distinguished themselves when they rescued approximately 1,200 survivors of USS Gambier Bay (CVE 73), USS Samuel B. Roberts (DE 413), USS Hoel (DD 533) and USS Johnston (DD 557) sunk by Japanese naval forces during the
Operation Olympic, the invasion of the Japanese home island of Kyushu, was the next big invasion planned for execution in March, 1946.

I think these ex LST personal that are doing this overhauling job of the 325 LST should be rewarded for their determined approach to returning this lady to sea.
LST 327 was hit by a torpedo and not mined as reported.
I was on LST 930H and we were in the Pacific during the war.

In an hour they were formed into a task group and ready to depart for the rescue area about 125 miles away.
No reply to our dispatch to Commander Seventh Fleet having been received by 1600, a second dispatch was sent off urging immediate approval and Captain Tarbuck was sent by boat to the Seventh Fleet flagship, the WASATCH, about a mile away to get action.
The hospital ships were the USS LSTs 266 and 464.
