 LST-787
In a raid on the 13th the 787 claimed destruction of an enemy aircraft and on the 20th she departed Okinawa, reaching Saipan on 26 May 1945.
Departing on the 12th arrived at Lingayen Gulf on the 15th where she loaded elements of the 308th Bomb Wing, 5th Air Force, with equipment and on the 20th departed for Okinawa, arriving on the 24th.
The 787 left Leyte on September 15th for Zamboanga, Mindanao, Philippine Islands where on the 18th and 19th elements and equipment of the116th Engineer Combat Battalion, 41st Army Division were loaded, departing for Honshu, Japan on the 19th.

 Coast Guard Manned LSTs
Some had Navy crewmen on board that manned the smaller landing craft attached to the LSTs or filled rates that the Coast Guard did not have enough men in such as radiomen, and medical staffs were typically Navy.
Coast Guard-manned LSTs participated in almost all of the major amphibious invasions undertaken by the U.S. during the war.
Although they were irreverently known by their crews as a Large, Slow Targets, these were the vessels that put troops and supplies on enemy shores, ensuring in the end a victory for the Allies over each of the Axis powers.

On the 14th, as the minesweepers started work in Yongil Man, the tractor group of LSTs, towing the LSUs and with two fleet tugs as escort, sailed from Tokyo Bay, to be followed on the morrow by the transport group.
Nine of the LSTs disgorged their cargo along the jetty wall and on the beaches of Yongil Man, along with the smaller landing craft; seven were ordered out to Kuryongpo around the point to unload vehicles.
On the 23rd the commanding officer of a Navy LST was directed by Admiral Doyle to take over the duties of senior officer present, and late in the evening the force commander sailed in Mount McKinley, with Union, Kyes, and Diachenko, for Tokyo.

 Korean War Naval Chronology, January-April 1952
USS Fletcher (DDE 445) and USS Apache (ATF 67) in the southeast Cho-do anchorage were fired on and straddled by 105 mm battery of four to six guns on the mainland to the southeast of them.
USS Apache (ATF 67) and HMCS Bioui (DDE) were fired upon by shore batteries when approaching south of Cho-do to recover Apache's anchor which had been shipped when she came under fire on 28 January.
USS Boyle (DMS 34) in a counter-battery engagement with an enemy gun received 12 near misses The battery was silenced with at Yang-do one gun probably destroyed.

Transferred to USS Estocin in Oct. 1993 and was involved in Counter Drug Operations and the Haiti Blockade.
Subsequently, I was assigned to USS Indepen- dence CVA-62 at NOB Norfolk.

I was a signalman on the USS Hollister DD-788 from Mar 71 to Jan 73.

February 22 - The destroyer escort USS Melvin R. Nawman (DE-416) is damaged by a collision with LST 807 in the Iwo Jima area.
The destroyer USS Kimberley (DD-521), light minelayer USS Robert H. Smith (DM-23) and high-speed transport USS Gilmer (APD-11) are damaged by suicide plane; the destroyer escort USS Sederstrom (DE-31) by collision; and the high-speed transport USS Knudsen (APD-11) by horizontal bomber, all in the Okinawa area.
April 24 - The destroyer escort USS Frederick C. Davis (DE-136) is sunk by a submarine torpedo in the Atlantic.

The USS VERNON COUNTY beaches and begins offloading the men and construction equipment that will be used to build the US Navy base on Diego Garcia.

USS LST-786 was manned by the US Coast Guard during World War II, and USS Garrett County (AGP-786) by the US Navy during the Vietnam War.
USS Garrett County (AGP-786) was transferred to South Vietnam, renamed Can Tho (HQ 801) and later acquired by the Philippines, renamed BPR Kalinga Apayao (LT 516)

During World War II, LST-787 was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific theater and participated in the following operations: Capture and occupation of Iwo Jima-February 1945, and the Assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto-April through June 1945.

In 1966, he was transferred to the Naval Support Activity, Danang, Republic of Vietnam, where he was to report aboard USS George K. MacKenzie (DD836).
Following completion of his tour aboard MacKenzie, Ford was subsequently transferred to the USS Henderson (DD 785) where he remained until the end of his second enlistment in 1967.
